    Hello all,

I ran an online tire configurator at my local shop and I ended up ordering a set of Falken Wildpreaks AT3w P245 75 R16 when my truck had generic HT P265 70 R16. Besides needing to redo my eye prescription, are there any performance differences between the two sizes? I noticed the tire size calculator online but while I await a response from the shop, will I be ok with the smaller size? Is it worth sending back to the shop?

My truck came with 245/75 tires when I bought it new off the lot. They are skinnier, but nothing wrong with them. Actually, due to less rolling resistance and lower weight, you should get slightly better fuel economy.

Thanks! As it turns out the P245 are XL rated whereas the P265 are SL. Better for rocks I guess.

The 245's will be 20mm narrower, same height for all practical purposes.

It makes your truck look like it skips leg day at the gym. If it came with 265/70 then stick with that size.

Spot on. I went to the 265/70’s and lost .5 MPG.

I can highlight some technical differences.

To start, most likely this P or non-P 265/70R16 had a LR of 112, so by moving into a 245/75R16 (luckily has the same LR of 112) and it being a XL tire, you'll most likely need to increase air pressure on the 245 to meet load for the truck. If all is true, your starting pressure on the 245/75s should be 36 PSI. Again, this is to meet load of the factory 265/70.

Next, since you have a narrower tire, this will help with traction in off-roading and wet. As what others have mentioned, narrower tire = less road resistance = better MPG. Not to mention, since it is a 245/75R16 and not a 265/70R16, the tire will also weigh less. This will also help, in theory, handling & braking as there is less unsprung weight on each corner. However, the narrower footprint can counter these gains made ,in part, of the weight reduction of the tire itself.

Should the new size not settle with you, we do have a 30 day/1000 trial period on the wildpeak AT3w, which can be exercised w/your tire shop.

Don't over think this. Most of the above concerns are more theoretical than real.

My Tacoma came with P265/70/16's that weighed 38 lbs each. Over the last 15 years and 221,000 miles I've had P245/75/16's on it, E rated LT265/75/16's that weighed 53 lbs each and I've had, and currently have, P265/75/16's on it. To me the P265/75/16's are the sweet spot as to size, ride, and performance. A little bigger than stock, but not enough to need any modification and with no real downsides. And as a bonus that size is usually a little less expensive than the others with more options to choose from.

Fuel mileage on my truck as remained constant at about 16-17 mpg for my normal everyday driving and 19-20 mpg hwy. I've gotten as much as 22-23 under ideal conditions, even with the 53 lb E rated tires which are supposed to kill fuel mileage. I could tell a difference in acceleration from a stop or when merging onto an interstate with the heavier tires. But once up to speed they didn't use any more fuel.

All of those sizes are within 1" in height and 3/4" in width. All have been a moderately aggressive AT tire. I've been driving close to 50 years now. In my experience there is no need to worry much about tire size, or weight, until you start to see significant differences. Going from a 31" tire to a 35" tire will make a difference. The tires rolling resistance is the biggest factor, and I'm not aware of any way to measure that. But as a general rule the more aggressive the tread, the more it affects fuel mileage.

Depending on road, cargo, weather and traffic conditions my fuel mileage can vary some. And I think sometimes you just get a bad tank of gas that will result in an unexplained loss of fuel mileage. I've had my fuel mileage drop by 2-4 mpg on an individual tank at times due to factors other than tires.

I could have done 1-2 mpg better on fuel mileage had I used a street tire, and it would have likely been 1-3 mpg worse had I used an aggressive mud tire. Even in the same sizes.

I got rid of the 265/70/R16 rugged trail oem tires at about 15,000mi. I went with P245/75/R16 Firestone Destination A/t. I'm on my second set of these now at about 90k. Great tires and a great size. No issues at all with them.

you got some cupping occuring on those rear tire shoulders. How are the front tires doing?

Make sure to cross rotate those rears.
