I have a 2022 Tacoma Limited. I noticed that the manual shows rotating the tires front to back and back to front instead of rear tires going forward and the front tires cross to the back. So have to assume the tires on my truck are directional, correct ? Any input would be appreciated. I do know the torque value is 83 ft lbs.
The manual also says not to put anything on the wheel stud threads, like grease or oil, my Yukon manual says the same thing. But I always put just a tad of anti-seize on wheel stud threads on all my rides (a small amount lasts for years). Folks think putting a small amount of anti-seize on the stud threads will interfere with torque values or might loosen over time. It does not.

Can’t say why the rotation direction is like that, maybe the limited has directional tires. I don’t think the other models do.

Edit: just checked the manual and sure enough it says that regardless of model. Interesting. I have not initialized the TPMS when I’ve done the rotation either. Oopsie.

As for anti seize on the threads, that’s a common practice in the Jeep world to prevent the threads from galling. We lessen the torque by about 20% due to anti seize making it easier to achieve the proper clamping with less torque. The nuts definitely don’t come loose from that either. However on my truck I have not used any anti seize, I don’t really see any reason to.

You have a 2022, why are you not letting the dealership do this and worry about this? You have Toyota Care for 2yrs/25k miles.

Some people don’t want to wait at the dealer for 2 hours or more when they can do it themselves in 20 minutes at home.

If you can jack up the entire truck, remove 4 sets of lugs, 4 sets of tires. Then rotate them in the correct order, re-torque the lugs and put the truck back down in under 20 mins I'll pay you $100.

    I betcha can't do it.

Yes, you are right. But I will be rotating my tires after that until they wear out and need a new set. Rotated the tires on my Yukon yesterday, rear to the front, front cross to the back.
Also, just bought oil filter and oil to change at 5000 miles, no way I’m going 10,000 miles on engine oil. They will change it free at 10,000, then I’ll do it at 15,000 then they do it at 20,000. By then the 2 years will be up, then I’ll change it every 5,000 for the next few decades, lol.

I always do back to front, and cross fronts to back. Do that for all non- directional tire. Otherwise they will never correct themselves of feathering and cupping. More important with AT/MT tires.

The OP has the Limited trim. That has 18inch street tires, which are directional.

Nope, truck tires are very rarely directional (most are winters). They are symmetrical and can be rotated in any pattern.

Ideally diagonal to rear, rear to front.'

OP it is safe to put a small amount of antiseieze on the hub surface to prevent build up.

The exact amount of time it takes wasn’t the point. I don’t time myself every time. The point was I can do it significantly faster than the dealer can and I don’t have to sit there for hours waiting.

How long it takes depends on a lot of factors. Temperature outside, how much space I have at the moment, how quickly I work, and how quickly I can find all my tools. If I’m set up to work decently, I can knock it out in 20 minutes no problem. An impact wrench for lug nut removal takes off the wheels in no time.

20-30 minutes is a good average. Maybe 40 if I’m extra slow. Still beats 2hr at the dealer and there are also no good dealers near me.

I can do them in 15 mins lol, I do the winter swaps for my family and friends. I have eletric impact, a good floor jack and compressor.

I don't use jack stands during tire swaps. I just do it. If it falls I'm not under it.

I’m the same way. The main thing is I do use a jack stand because I don’t have two jacks (well I do, but one of them I don’t like). So I usually set the rear axle on stands and briefly lift each front side one by one while I swap the ones from the rear onto the fronts. Then I put the fronts on the rear and drop them back down.

Never grease wheel nuts/stud threads and shoulders. These fittings are set to Dry torque of 83Ft/Lbs.

"If you want to apply a lubricant on the thread you should reduce the torque by 25-33%. This is done to prevent over stressing the bolt or nut."

https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/... torque specified, bolt may overload and break.

But, you do you and realize you hare lucky that you haven had a failure resulting in an accident with injury.

Ha, I just realized I go in for my first 6 month inspection and rotation in early Feb. I’ll ask them if they are directional, then I’ll know what the pattern is for down the road. And yes the tires are all season, not all terrain probably due to the fact it’s a 2WD. Love this truck, and I figured out a way to get an accurate dipstick reading, lol.

Back to front or vise versa tire rotation is fine, I have been doing it for many years and it works, and if they are directional it would be noted on the OM or the tire side wall by an arrow, word or both.

I also do not let the dealership or shops rotate mine because they use very high torque impact wrench for speed’s sake, that can lead to vibration/shudder issues. And 83lbs, Is what I torque mine at, no lube of any kind for my driving environment, your mileage may very.

They go front to back and back to front. No crossing.

I personally don't plan on rotating the tires that came with my 2022 cause I want them to wear out faster to justify getting the real tires I want. I can't justify replacing brand new tires right now, so gotta do it right.

I’ll use one floor jack no impact wrench and I’ll take your money. And my driveway isn’t even level so I’ll even have to move a wheel chock around.

Agree, they are not directional. Cross pattern is best.

Easiest to tell if a tire is directional, there will be an arrow on side wall. Actually a few arrow with word rotation or dierecton. Highly doubt you have directional tires.
