Hi, I have a 21 Tacoma long bed TRD offroad 4x4 that I purchased new. Looking for recommendations regarding upgrading tires to a bit more aggressive capability without adding too much additional road noise.

    * Wish to keep same factory rims
    * Mostly street driving but some off road
    * Current tires are original Goodyear Wranglers 265/70R16
    * Live in Phoenix AZ so snow/rain not a big issue

    Thanks, Mark

Wildpeak AT3, or Toyo Open Country III are great options. Going from 265/70 to 265/75 is about +1" larger (30.6 vs 31.6"). No cutting/rubbing issues with this size.

Can go bigger if you are willing to trim some plastic on the cab side of your front wheel well.

Cooper Discoverer AT/3; I'm on my third set in almost five years (roughly 90K miles; I replaced the first set of four earlier than planned because I put a 2-inch lift on my truck and wanted slightly larger tires). I love my Coopers!

Bfg trail terrains. Don’t buy the Toyo at3 like others recommended I had those on my truck prior to swapping to bfg . Those tires were so loud on the highway . My bfg are so quiet on the highway good in the rain and light trails . And they look great .

the stock tires are pretty decent :) anyway, ive had good luck with ridge grapplers. Got 60k miles on my current set, probly got another 20k in them. They're relatively quiet for their age, too (and they look better than anything else imo :anonymous:)

im guessing its a typo. 265/70/17's are roughly 1" taller than stock, same for 265/75/16

Don't get the Duratracs. They are way more aggressive, and add additional road noise.

    Man, I love them...

-1 against toyo open country AT III. very loud, worse traction than any other tire ive had. Drove to alaska in February on those.

BFG KO2 are pretty alright but people here seem to hate them, ive driven coast to coast with mutiple sets on multiple vehicles and dont have any complaints except wet asfault traction. Im excited to see how the KO3 performs

Have a set of Falken wildpeaks now but not enough time to on them to tell if i like them

Ive run 265/75-16 with no rubbing

Also i usually run load range E but they are a noticeably rougher ride, maybe look into a C or D load rating

If you are doing mostly street driving with some mild non-pavement stuff thrown in my vote would be the Michelin LTX AT2. I have them and they ride great and are very quiet, yet you have a bit more aggressive tread than Michelin Defenders for those dirt and gravel roads.

Love the guys who come on here complaining about road traction then admit they run E rated tires
E rated tires are for one tons. People with tacos want them for their toughness off road. If you’re just doing some beach runs you should be fine with the softer load ranges.
I run XL Toyo ATIII’s and they have just fine wet traction. I live in the pacific NW and it rains a lot. I have no problem with these tires. I also have had the BFG KO2’s on an F150 and they were howlers. A lot louder than my Toyos. Between the 2 they have decent snow traction and it’s really in the driver instead of the tire sometimes. AT’s you gotta religiously rotate them so be prepared to do this every oil change.

Yes load range E are way overkill for a tacoma

But the 16" stock wheel size can make it difficult to find a specific tire in a specific size that is not LR E

I just recently moved to a 17" wheel for better size options

I dont know how a Toyo open country in a load range C or XL performs.
but i know that in a 265/75R16 E, its worse than the same size KO2 in every way. And waaaayy worse than a 255/80R17 falken wildpeak, but like i said i dont have enough time on the falkens yet to make a judgement

The Toyo howeled at surface street speeds the day had them mounted, and its a higher pitch more annoying howl than most other ATs
    0/10 would not recommend

Coincidentally, i have a set of 4 toyo ATs with about 10k miles on them if anyone local to NW ohio wants to buy them :bananadead:

For OP’s use case, this is the answer. But just my opinion.
