    Hello all,

I'm in need of some new tires and could use some help. I'm still running the OEM tires on a 2018 TRD Offroad, the Goodyear Wrangler All Terrain with Kevlar. My first question is does anyone know what these are rated or what ply they are? Goodyear's website doesn't say: https://www.goodyear.com/en-US/tires/wrangler-all-terrain-adventure

I'm wanting to go up a little in size from 265/70-R16 to 265/75-R16. I believe these are the largest tires you can put on a stock third gen offroad model without rubbing. I was looking at the BFGoodrich KO2's that I seem to see on vehicles all over the place, however they only come in that size as E rated (10-ply). Another option is the Les Schwab Open Range A/T which come in that size as D rated (8-ply). Would you all recommend one over the other? Is 10-ply overkill for a Tacoma and is 8-ply going to be okay when driving over rocks (nothing too crazy, it's a stock truck with skid plates).

    Thanks for any help!

Discount tires website gives a lot of info about the rating and ply on those All-Terrain Adventures. They have a few load ranges to select from. I run a 265/75-R16 Falken Wild Peaks on my truck, its stock height and I don't rub.

All stock Taco tires are Standard Load (SL). If you are not wheeling hard or carrying MGVW often, then SL is all that you need. Also, SLs typically have softer rubber compounds that get better wet and snow traction.

I've wheeled with the stock PoS Toyos and my current SL rated ATs. Aired up and aired down. I can't yet see the need to run a C, XL, or E rated tire.

Many years ago I ran a stick through the side of one of the original tires on my '85 Toyota on a back road. Since then I have used only higher rated tires on my trucks.

I am not saying that punctures don't happen. I had some on 10ply rated motorcycle tires and am just relating my experience / input.

IMHO, if I'm living 99% of the time on road, LTs just can't be justified, esp when the wet grip is lower.

I have a 2016 OR with a 2/1.5" spacer level for now. Also running bfg ko2s at 265/75/r16 you can check out some of my posts for pictures on how they sit on the truck. No rub, probably can go larger

Agreed. These tires are heavier, they are harder to get rolling and harder to stop. They will make your truck feel sluggish as will larger tires. I can't see running them if you don't need them. If you are off road a lot they may be justifiable but for normal highway/city and light trail driving they come at a high cost. Just my 2 cents.

How do you like the Falken Wild Peaks? Did you get them SL or E rated?

E-rated tires are a bit overkill but most of your options are E-rated so I wouldn’t let that sway you.

Pick a tire that fits your needs.

Ask yourself if you're comfortable with having a rough ride, poor wet road traction, way more road noise, and a reduction in mileage and acceleration of 10-15%. If you are, go ahead with the KO's, as that is what you will achieve (I have them). If you're only doing gravel roads, look at a lighter weight c or e rated tire, as there can be HUGE discrepancies between e rated tires in regards to weight. I figured that it was worth it to buy a second set of stock take off OEM tires and rims, as well as the KO's. The money I saved NOT using the KO's when around town or on the highway literally payed for the $300 set of stock rims and tires I found on craigslist, and the snow traction is way better on the P rated tires.
I also have a 3rd set of tires/rims with Firestone Destination XT's on them. They're E rated, but weigh the same as the P rated tires. I LOVE them. Excellent compromise.
I don't think I'll ever need to buy tires for this truck again, but I see them as shoes.

If I understand correctly this means that the OEM tires are just 4-ply, correct?

Tirerack.com is a good resource for specs and comparisons of tires also.

My biggest concern is a rough ride followed by road noise, the more I research the more I think an E rated tire is too much overkill. I'm considering the Les Schwab Open Range A/T but don't yet know if I'd get the 6-ply or 8-ply. I'm also interested in other tires people recommend on here such as the Falken Wild Peaks, but those are either SL or E in the size I want.

If ride quality, road noise and a decent appearance are important, let me throw in 3 options to help make your decision more difficult.
    Toyo AT 3
    Bridgestone Revo 3
    Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus
These are not the only ones that fit this bill.

all three of these have great ratings for noise, comfort and wet traction. The Toyos and Pirellis have the three peak snow designation also. Tire choice usually involves compromise in some way. Examples being - Great looks, but loud. Great off roading but heavy, or modest in wet. The tire discussions and debates are endless here. You should list your priorities and then get review info from TireRack.com and then couple that with opinions here, and elsewhere.

I have the SL, and I do like them a lot. I had the BFG KO2 in the same size but I really didn't care for the ride. Ended up exchanging them for the Wild Peaks and am happy with them.
