Any advice on plugging this? I’ve plugged tires before, but only in the tread area not the sidewall like this. I know tire shops won’t do it. E4EFB9F5-96D8-4492-B14F-7493AE014ED3.jpg

Plug it the same as you would on the tread.

I'd replace it. I don't like plugging tires especially when it's on the sidewall. I suppose you could save it for a spare, but I wouldn't.

    Hmmmm.......

Suggest a plug as a temporary repair. Then to a tire shop for a patch inside the tire.

Both the plug and patch are a bit on the iffy side, because the hole is in a high flex area of the tire, known as the shoulder.

Relegate that tire to Spare tire duty.

^^ This. I won't have a tire with sidewall damage repaired. If it's tread and can be patched then ok, but not sidewall damage.

yup, nobody will do it. I’ve plugged it for now, seems pretty solid. Going on a trip in a week. I’d buy a new tire (I hate to replace just one, but this set only has 6000 miles on it), but nobody has a 255/75/17 ko2 in stock or can get one in stock before my trip. My spare which is on currently is a 265/75/16 wildpeak.

Might be a good time to rent a car........

    just had a 2nd thought.

What is the difference in the outside tire diameter between the spare and the 17s??

I could be wrong, but calculation wise, the diameter differs by 0.4 inch. You may be able to slide by with the spare on the rear.

that dont look too deep, just pull it out, i bet that didnt puncture the tire

if you want just spit on it before pulling it out and see if you get any bubbles

ya, it’s not bad. I actually have all 4 old tires/rims I may just throw on for this trip. Just no tpms, but meh. Definitely not renting a car. This trip is mostly off-road, but we can always take my wife’s forester if we need too.

Oh it did. The whole reason I noticed is because I’ve had a slow leak for the past few weeks.

I plugged it. Letting it sit overnight to see if my plug holds up well. I’m just a little nervous about driving on it, but it’s probably fine. 6F44CFFB-19A7-4C9C-9D68-0BAD5E475491.jpg

    Both are better options.

Toss on the ol' 16s (the set) or roll with the Subaru. Is the Suby easier on fuel???

I plugged a tire years ago, further down on the side wall then that. I finally wore the set out and that plug held for the life, several thousand miles, of that tire.

SO, I'd plug that sucker and live on. Worst it'll due is start to leak again.

Huh, that’s reassuring. The only thing I’m really worried about is it causing some kind of a blowout because it’s kinda on the tire shoulder.

Ya, I may throw the 16s on. We kinda need the truck for camping. The subie is easier (slightly) on fuel. It drinks 91 premium because it’s a Fozzy XT (turbo). Super fun car to rally on gravel roads thou.

It's always worth it to try a plug. Worse case you buy a new tire anyways

Retired on my couch with a cold beer in my hand
    too much to type
Toss it and purchase a new one, it’s a liability on a garage to fix that. The damage is on the sidewall.
