Hey all. Has anyone ever removed the old bedliner using Paint inner or some other type of chemical rather than using a grinder in several hours of hard work??

It's not factory. So if you could find out the product there might be some help available from the manuf.

Why do you need to remove it? Improper prep from the initial install?

Subbed- I'm in a similar spot. I applied rolled on Herculiner 20 years ago, which is now coming off most places (Yes, it was well prepped, I consider 20 years for a $100 product pretty decent). I want to remove it and redo it with Raptor Liner. My best thought at this point is to tent off the bed (or remove it entirely) and go to town with a wire wheel on the angle grinder, but I'd love to know what others have done...

Someone in another thread was going to try Aircraft Remover or Citristrip. Might have to set it sit, and possibly cover with Saran Wrap to prevent drying out.

I've heard of people using dry ice to remove dried out sound deadening from the inside of vehicles. The dry ice gets the material cold enough that it shatters and separates from the metal. Not sure if it would work with bedliner, but might be worth trying.

I was going to use those polycarbide abrasive wheels with my grinder. I need to remove the paint underneath though too. The aircraft paint stripper was forced to reformulate a decade ago or so due to VOCs or something, so it sucks now (or so I hear). I'd just put in the elbow grease.

I'm my experience, those work way better than a wire wheel, though I've never used on bed liner. 3m is the way to go the cheaper Amazon ones work, but leave a residue.

So I was looking at my truck bed and noticed a sticker on the inside with a label of LINE-X AZ (Arizona). Apparently, they are the company who did the aftermarket job of putting in the bed liner.

Their phone number was included so I called it and it was probably no longer in service. I decided to google the company, found them and called the current number. Spoke to a very nice gentleman about my issue and he said this:

    1) Their product is extremely difficult to remove! He suggested a hammer and a chisel, to which we both laughed.

    2) I asked him what should I do and he suggested that I sand the crap out of it and to use a BA (can't remember what that stood for, but something along the lines of some type of sander).

    3) He then suggested I can just roll whatever product onto the top of theirs which I like very much.

I will follow-up when I finally get the time and chance to work on this project. For now, my main focus is installing new strut (coilovers) and shocks.

Take it to line-x and have them fix the bad spots, possibly respray the whole bed. Line-x is bomber stuff…Embrace it

Ya Line-X is definitely a name I recognize. I mean fair point you could just put another layer on top... I'd soak in de-greaser then pressure wash. Let dry and go at it.

So I actually just used both of these the other day for my bed liner. From my experience, the wire wheel took off the bed liner faster but didn’t get down to the metal as fast as the abrasive wheel. It might be worth just getting both of them like I did so you have options. So I guess it depends if you just want to scuff up the original paint or if you want to get down to the bare metal.
Also, the abrasive wheel eventually wore down where as the wire wheel did not. Food for thought.

I'm pretty much in this boat too.

I did the hurculiner stuff maybe a dozen years ago. The prep turned out perfectly fine as it's not pealing anywhere, it's just wearing thin. So whenever I get around to Raptor lining my whole truck (yes, I know, lol), I plan to just clean the bed with acetone (or something like it) and maybe sand down some rough spots, then spray the Raptor over it.

I've used these on milscale, they work well, but don't seem to last very long.

Line-X is pretty much the industry leader in spray-in bed-liners. It's honestly impressive you hadn't heard of them.

I'm even more surprised that someone at Line-X gave to such flip advise. Line-X has lifetime warranties on their product (for the orig owner), and standard ways to repair their liners. They're generally pretty protective of their brand so I can't imagine someone would legitimately say "just roll whatever product onto the top of it."

The first thing he should have said is "bring it in and we'll take a look at it."

That's pretty much what I'd expect, and yeah, I have a handful of wheels, cups, and other abrasive wheels on hand. But my old cheap liner is pretty thin now, and I don't expect it to put up as much of a fight as 1/8" Line-X or Rhino.

I don't think I'd try to get to bare metal across the entire bed, but at least to the original prep- vacuum everything, acetone wipe down, and then send it on the raptor.
