I've run into issues with these screws in the past so I know you can strip them really quickly if using a regular Philips head screw drivers plus they're on there tight.

This time around I stuck a 12" adjustable wrench on the end of the screw driver to generate the torque needed to break the screw free.

JIS is different from Phillips. It has to do with how the JIS comes to more of a "sharp" point where the Phillips edges form a small "dot" at their tip. I've worked on a lot of Japanese motorcycles through the years and witnessed a lot of destroyed fasteners from using Phillips screwdrivers on JIS hardware.

Skip to 2:50 to see a demonstration of how much grip the JIS has compared to a Philips. https://youtu.be/gEwVUZr5xxQ

Don't you mean Phillips is more pointed so the bit doesn't bottom in JIS screws? JIS drivers are more blunted, Phillips drivers come to a point.

A JIS driver will remove a Phillips screw with no damage, a Phillips driver will likely strip a JIS screw because it can't bottom in the screw head.

A hammer impact driver with JIS bits works magic on old stuck japanese motorcycle screws.

The illustrations I've seen depicting the 2 show the JIS coming to a sharp point and the Phillips appearing to have a small dot or circle at the very tip. The set of JIS screwdrivers I have came from McMaster-Carr and the tips are much sharper than any Phillips I own or have ever handled. This is why the Phillips cams out on a true JIS screw. The more blunt tip of the Phillips can't fully seat in the JIS screw.

    Piggy backing this thread.

Is it safe to assume that all the screws on our truck will be JIS? I notice the two little ones holding on the MAF were tricky when using a Phillips. I now assume those are JIS also?

Also any recommendations on a decent JIS set without breaking the bank?

Im a bit weary of this one: https://www.amazon.com/Screwdriver-...rds=jis+screwdriver+set&qid=1596038692&sr=8-4

Because of the first/most relevant helpful review

    Here's what I bought.

Very happy with them, they're actually made in Japan for what that's worth. Left my neighbor use one on a stuck Phillips screw and he was pretty amazed at how well they work.

Pro-tip: Put a dab of valve grinding compound on the screwdriver tip to increase traction - learned this from Eric at South Main Auto YouTube channel.

Yeah manual impact driver is great if the installation allows for it. Unfortunately the tool is impractical for "flimsy" parts like the fuel door striker. For the IAC it's probably fine.
