I wouldn't replace the timing chain unless it broke.

If it breaks in this engine it will destroy the engine it definitely has to be replaced the engine is a 2.4 L and believe you me I'm really not thrilled about having to get it done but I have two hundred seventy-four thousand miles on the engine I put new front wheel bearings on it and brakes and when I took it down off the stands and went to start it up I heard this clunk which was either the plastic guide bracing or it jumped tooth on the gears and I can hear it slightly slapping against the housing plus the research that I've done of others and the symptoms I have the same

I don't know much about the 4cyl timing chains but theyre considered a lifetime part...it's the timing belt on the V6 that has a 90k replacement interval

But if it's showing signs of failure or stretching then it's better to be safe than sorry

The tag on door of my truck States 10/95 my title says 1996 maybe I misread the information about the 22R all I know is I'm a life member of the DAV service-connected for my feet and I got to have transportation I got a F-150 with a zero mile transmission in it I just had put in thought I only had 94000 miles on the ends and because it is a one owner truck come to find out it's probably got about $294,000 and it's got a bad cylinder I have an F-350 with $6,500 worth of Parts about 10 to 12 thousand miles on remanufactured engine engine and everything that is 27 year old kid about three and a half years ago rear-ended me while I was doing 55 miles an hour down the highway and bent the frame on my truck totaled my truck out so hopefully that engine I can put in the F-150 but right now I got to have this Toyota going cuz I've already almost rebuilt this truck and I need to transportation the basically all I need to know is what gas cuz I need to get cuz I've already got the timing chain ordered and is it necessary to have to remove the head

I also have a 90 Mustang 350 hp and I can never understand how come my Tacoma gets more respect Just got a 99 Jeep TJ that I rebuilt, and painted in the garage
If the oil has always been changed, and the motor is clean inside I bet it's like new. Mine is at 280,000. Castrol synthetic most of it's life, and it's new inside

Strange... 3RZ taco here with 325k miles original chain, had the engine apart at 275k miles to do head gasket and re-seal oil pan and inside it looked like new. Toyota 4 cylinders are impressive!

Oh I did a lot of research all over the Internet to get information I don't know about 3rz but a lot of ones I read they were talking about changing it out around 250,000 miles they recommend doing it at a hundred thousand miles one guy made the statement that if the timing chain breaks it will grenade your engine and of course the others stated that it would destroy the engine also and also I experiencing the same thing they were talking about they experienced before changing it

Yeah, the 2rz and 3rz are interference engines so if it goes out of time really bad things happen, I had a timing belt skip on my Audi and ended up with 20 bent valves...

Did you pull the valve cover yet? If not pull the cover and inspect the chain as well as guides and go from there...

I don't tear into an engine unless it's absolutely needed. I don't blame you for wanting to do it. I would love to adjust my valves . That's the number one thing with our motors.

Valve adjustment is soooo easy on the 4 cylinders, unlike the 5VZ you gotta remove most of the intake to remove valve covers....

I'm just about for sure that when I heard that clunk when I went to start it up the other day it was probably the plastic guide plus the way it's been acting afterwards and before I thought it might have been the fuel filter and or the valves but I listen to real close today and it sounds like it's slightly slapping up against the housing

The guides wear… then the chain. Theres a million kits available. No, you don’t need to pull the head. It’s no big deal. DO NOT BUY CHEAP EBAY CRAP!!!! Very least go Napa brand. Watch YouTube. Have fun

I’m not suggesting it’s necessary to buy Toyota but you get what you pay for with this stuff. Buy once, cry once. Good luck, you can doooo it!!!!
