Hey all, I've noticed my 2014 v6 taco is making a ticking noise and a little rough idle. I dont know if its the valves or not. Is this normal on the v6. I used to have a 2004 highlander and it made no noise and smooth idle , could barely tell if it was running.

It sounds like the Taco tick. Lots of these motors (4.0 V6) have this. Just check to make sure you're oil is topped off. If so, that's likely what your hearing.

The taco tick is what you are hearing more than likely.
As far as the rough idle it could be time for new plugs.

I picked up mine about 6 months ago, had an aftermarket oil filter and who knows what kind of oil in it. Heard the same ticking.
Ran it a couple of thousand miles until the oil change interval came up, slapped on an OEM filter and Kendall synthetic oil and the ticking has diminished by about 1/3 to 1/2...as far as your idle, these 4.0 liters are not built to be sewing machine smooth...you do own a truck after all.

Installed Overhead Compass and Temperature Display along with outside temperature sensor and wiring; LED lights reverse backup; LED license plate lights; Added GTA Bluetooth Audio kit to stock radio for iphone audio; Spare tire steel braided air hose extension connection to rear bumper; Installed new headlights along with new bulbs PIAA H4 XTreme and for fog lights PIAA H10 XTreme bulbs. Installed new hood with "hood-scoop". Installed Predator Side Steps. Replaced front chrome grill with customized color matched (Desert Sand Mica) grill with added TOYOTA lettering (also in matched color), installed and secured tailgate anti-theft devices. Also installed a new external TPMS monitor for all 4 tires.
    Engine ticking sound.

For Tacoma trucks with V6 (4.0) engines it's normal (sad to say).

The ticking sound really becomes noticeable, no...wait!... more like "irritating", if or when you go through a fast food's drive up place and the buildings wall next to you just echo's the ticking sound making it sound louder than it is. Or even when pulling into a basic car wash bay, this happens too.

Over the years what I found out with my 08 Tacoma was, when it came close to needing to have the engine oil changed I noticed that the ticking would get just a bit louder.

After changing the oil (using Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil) the ticking sound would basically go away (really wasn't noticeable but still there just quieter) until time came to close to having to replace the oil again, then that ticking sound would become more noticeable again.

Until either Toyota manufacture or someone comes up with a permanent solution, you're just going to have to live and deal with it.

Normal. My '82, and '84 four cyl pickups had it. My '03 1st gen V6 had it as does my '07 2nd gen V6. It does seem to quite down a bit after oil changes. You're good. :)

Best fix I have found is replacing it with the supercharger whine.

my 13 did it when I bought it, had an OEM filter but not sure what oil was in it. when I changed the oil I started using Mobil 1 syn & OEM filter, majority of the ticking went away. Just a noisy engine. As far as rough idle, I religiously use Sea Foam in all my vehicles, farm & lawn equipment, mainly because of this shitty ethanol fuel. Put a bottle of that in the next time you go to fill up.

Glad I found this thread and can sleep better. Recemt plug and synthetic oil change - feared my gaps were off.

An oil with more molybdenum disulfide (moly) anti-wear additive may quiet the tick, this was the case with my 4Runner 4.0L. Pennzoil High Mileage or Quaker State Ultimate Durability, both labeled as synthetic and containing ~140-150ppm of moly, reduced idle ticking noise to the point I can't hear it unless the hood is up. Even then, the ticking sound is very faint.

By comparison, Mobil-1 oils typically have 60-80ppm of moly. May or may not be the same "moly" compound as there are several in common use, but Mobil-1 left more ticking sound than Pennzoil or Quaker State.

edit: if you want to test the furthest extreme, get Toyota Genuine Motor Oil in 0W-20. It is reported to have >700ppm of moly.

Like stated above, most likely the Tacoma Tick. OEM filter Pennz Platinum best combo I found. It is a tick, like tapping a pen on a table right, not a clunk or knock or anything right?
As far as idle goes... Only time mine doesn't idle like a purring kitten is when something is off.
