So i have a 1998 tacoma with the 2.4 in it. I recently pulled the motor to replace the oil pan gasket, rear main seal, front crank seal and the valve cover gasket. When i put the motor back in and cranked it up everytime I accelerate it makes a ticking noise like a ziptie is hitting the fan but it ticks only when i am accelerating it will not do it while its idling... i was told it may be the timing chain but i need other opinions before i replace it. I read on here people had kinda the same problem but it was the exhaust and i have checked everything dealing with the exhaust and it cant be it.

99k is really low for a 2rz and especially low to need a timing chain. If it still shifts and drives okay I'd lean toward exhaust leak too, really common on the 2 into 1 collector that has three bolts.

That's good. That's what it sounds like when the flexplate is cracked.

It would help if you can record the sound or a video. I recorded that sound file on my iPhone and exported it and uploaded it to that website.

I will try and get one. Would it make that sound if the bolts aren’t tightened down all the way?

Or if you reused the old exhaust gaskets

Did you torque everything to spec and use thread sealer?

It'll make that sound if the flexplate is hitting the inspection plate or it's cracked. It could be something else but I'm really not sure. I do know if the sound worsens and becomes like my sound bytes than your flexplate is cracked.

    I wouldn't think it'd be a timing chain (do you even have a timing chain ? ) This is a 4 banger ?

In any event most likely would'nt even run , even if it only jumped a half tooth..

It's a 2RZ-FE 2.4l four cylinder. That and the 3RZ-FE 2.7l both had timing chains. The 5VZ-FE v6 is what had the timing belt.

Yes it does have a timing chain cause i was going to replace it while it was out but it looked fine and tight still. But we did not take the exhaust manifold off so i dont see why it would leak
