Folks, I recently ran into the tall grass and of course ended with chigger bites. One thing I learned in the Corps was to spray permethrin on your clothes but what if your already itchy?
None of the creams are very effective.
My best solution to prevent the itching and potential worsening is to apply heat.
Specifically, I use a hair dryer to 1-relieve the itch and 2-it takes away the itch for about 12 hours for me.
Just apply the heat until you cant take it anymore and your itch free preventing infections and inflammation. Mic drop!!

Best way to treat chigger bites is to apply a cold ice pack. Then apply over the counter cortisone cream and take a Benadryl. Be sure to wash your cloths as soon as you get home. I remove my cloths in the garage and then straight into the washing machine to kill any still on your cloths.
The same treatment applies to ticks. Also it’s especially important after being in tick country to not wear your cloths into the house but to deliver them directly into the washer. A single tick falling onto your carpet can lay thousands of eggs and then you have a major problem.
I’m most often exposed to the little bastards while hunting with my dog. What I do is change my cloths after the hunt and seal them in a plastic bag until I get home. As soon as I get home I flea comb the dog and then he gets gets a thorough bath.
You are right prevention with permethrin is the best. Spray it around your boots and bottom pants legs. Also seal your pants legs with a rubber band or something so they can’t get to your skin. Wear long sleeve shirts and seal the cuffs the same as your pants cuffs.

I use 3 layers of DEET for protection--on my skin, on my socks, on my pants and waist. Shower after getting back inside to wash any chiggers off. If bitten, use Ivy-Dry on your skin and take an antihistamine.
