New member post, thanks in advance! Just replaced my 4Runner (280K) with a 2010 Tacoma 6 speed with 70K on it. Didn't even get 500 miles on it and need the throw out bearing replaced.

In reading posts here and talking to a mechanic buddy, the idea came up of doing the whole clutch while they've got it torn apart. But only 70K on it so looking for input. (keep in mind this would all be work done by a shop, not myself)

Id replace it with this upgraded sleeve/larger TOB from urd. It would also be a good idea to replace the clutch pressure plate at the same time while the trans is dropped. You can probably have the flywheel resurfaced, but if youre looking for a lightweight or heavy option, urd has those as well

If you are gonna pull the tranny for the TOB, definitely replace the clutch. The labor for the tranny drop is the lions share of the cost. The friction disc/Pressure plate can be had for ~$200 or more depending on which you choose.

Is it actually out or is it working and just doing the "chirp"

Good question for sure. Mine started chirping at 65K, it sounds the same at 99K so I'm just ignoring it.

Mine has been chirping for 50,000 miles. If i went through all the work to get into the clutch assembly, I'm replacing the whole thing. Flywheel too. New or resurfaced

Okay this is new to me. Is the chirp just a sound that seems like a squeaking belt but goes away when clutch is depressed? I’ve had that for a while

    Correct

It’s either the TOB and/or the pilot bearing. When you load it up by pressing the clutch,it stops.

Thanks guys. Do you have a little shudder when you go to take off when the truck is cold occasionally? My clutch feels great honestly but I always wondered what was causing that. I got a hearty rattle around 800-1000 rpm too.

Mine has always had the take off shudder for the first few take offs when cold outside. Also get the metal rattle.

Mines pretty much had the clutch shudder it’s whole life and I’ve had the truck since new in 08. It’s especially noticeable when it’s cold and/or wet outside. Goes away after a couple takeoffs. My previous Subaru’s did this as well.

Good to know. It typically solves itself like yours does so I’ve never worried about it much. Glad I’m not the only one, and our trucks aren’t the only thing affected by this.

The good thing is it doesn't sound like anyone's had a serious problem develop from the TO bearing chirp. When I replace mine I'll do the URD sleeve (that eventually chirps too) or (when URD is done with the re-vamp) I'll do the FIX-U hydro bearing that changes the TO bearing to GM style.

Hopefully for the OP his bearing is only chirping, and if so I hope he can live with it!

Be aware that a new OEM flywheel is mega money.

It's called "batch replacement"; any time you have to remove or disassemble a major part, replace/renew everything related to the mechanism. So, resurface the flywheel, replace the pilot bearing, release bearing, pressure plate and disc; examine the clutch fork for finger wear (where the release bearing fits) and if worn, replace the clutch fork too. While you're there, replace the rear main seal on the engine, and the front transmission seal. Each of those items requires dropping the transmission to replace or repair, so while you have it out, do the whole thing and you won't have to worry about it again for quite a while. It will be more expensive up front, but cheaper in the long run, because so much of the cost is labor just to take things apart to get the one thing that needs fixing. I hope your mechanic is a good one, and won't take you for a ride. God help you if you take it to a Toyota dealer.

There was a TSB years ago for the throw out bearing. The luk bearings were bad. Mine was done at 27,000 miles
