Anyone use the slotted axle shims rather than the single hole shims? Seems like it would be easier to install the slotted since all you would have to do is loosen the assembly and push/tap/hammer the shim in place. Shouldn't have to remove the centering pin I wouldn't think.

I read about them when I was considering putting shims in. Seems like the general consensus was that if you wheel a lot and are flexing out the springs regularly, you're better off with the non-slotted ones as the slotted ones can move around more easily or fall out of place.

Just off the top of my head I would think under heavy abuse youd be more likely to have failure.

Usually if I have to remove ages old u-bolts it's best to get new ones anyways. If not, how hard is it to put one with a hole on it in? There's usually ample room between the axle and the springs once the bolts are loosened. Plus the ones with holes have their own centering pin to adjust the axle .

Mines a DD and rarely sees off-road use except during deer and turkey season. Even then I don't "wheel" it. Repair's cost too much.

Honestly I wouldn't even be worried about wheeling. I would worry about washboard or hitting a deep pothole. Just go with holes it's like no extra work and way more peace of mind.
