I recently cleaned the Engine bay of my Tacoma.
I used Purple Power in a spray bottle on the dirty spots and the underside of the hood, then hosed it down with a garden hose. I was shocked how well it cleaned up.
Now it looks new under the hood.
this stuff is also good for cleaning the door where the door seals cause the frame to get dirty and black.
I've been using it on my Harley for clean up after an oil change so I tried it on the truck.
    This stuff is great.

Some of that shit is hard on aluminum.

I have used the purple formulation of simple green - I think it’s the only reason be that’s aluminum-safe

It is awesome stuff and a great value for the price, but you have to be very careful with it. It can damage/stain some surfaces and/or materials, and should be diluted 50/50 with water for most usues.

Well yeah, it is concentrated so you would need to delute it. My only advice with it would be to keep it away from the alternator and the fan belt, but that would be the same for any cleaning agent.

I've found that purple power tends to make plastics and wires get brittle and hard.

It cleans good but I don't recommend it.

I used it on my polished aluminum wheels and it made them “cloudy” looking.
But that was about 20 years ago, they might have changed the formula since.
Just don’t let it sit too long on polished aluminum.

I've used Simple Green on EVERYTHING (including many forms of aluminum) for years and never had any issues. Just recently heard about how Simple Green can be bad for aluminum. Best I can tell it's only a concern if you use it with little-to-no dilution and/or let it sit without being rinsed off. I've used it nearly full strength on aluminum heads/blocks/wheels for years and never had an issue but I also always rinse thoroughly immediately.

That said, I'm glad I know now because I can be more careful - specifically around any aluminum that isn't sealed/treated/coated.

That’s exactly how I used it. Not diluted and let it set.
Just like I used to do with the parts store “wheel cleaner”.
Evidently that was a bad idea. But it did take off the dirt, grime and brake dust.

Safe and cleans extremely well even without brushing.
It is not the El Cheapo route though, but how often do you clean the engine bay.

Usually things marketed and developed to do certain things are good at doing those certain things. Not others.

I would try a dedicated engine or engine bay cleaner instead.
I use purple degreaser to clean floors. It dries too fast to clean the engine bay and doesn’t foam. Can’t imagine it’s good for that purpose

There are many "wheel" cleaners out there that are NOT safe for un-coated aluminum wheels. And much, much more dangerous than Simple Green - like, immediately damage rather than damage only under some conditions. So far my trick for keeping wheels super clean is using a product like IronX. Nothing else removes metallic brake dust as well.

    From simple green website:
A safer option to harsh chemicals, Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner is non-corrosive and safe for cleaning chrome, aluminum, stainless steel and other metals. The engine-safe formula breaks down tough grease, oil, road grime and other automotive fluids, making it ideal for cleaning your engine.
https://simplegreen.com/cleaning-tips/automotive/engines/#:~:text=A safer option to harsh, ideal for cleaning your engine.

    From Purple Power website:
Can Purple Power be used on Stainless Steel and Aluminum?
Do not use Purple Power on Stainless Steel or Aluminum as it could leave white streaks or a hazy film. If accidentally used on Stainless Steel or Aluminum and you have this residue, try buffing with a Metal Polish, such as Wenols or Mothers Metal Polish to restore finish.
https://www.clean-rite.com/faq#:~:text=Do not use Purple Power,Metal Polish to restore finish.

Soap and water is fine and, with any of these cleaners, rinse quickly and rinse well.

Just to further add, note the following from Simple Green's website (reference link):

Aluminum — Is it safe to use Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner on aluminum?
When used with caution and according to the instructions, Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner has been safely and successfully used to clean aluminum. Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner, Crystal Simple Green Industrial Cleaner & Degreaser, and Simple Green Pressure Washer Concentrates have been used on aircraft, automotive, industrial and consumer aluminum items for over 20 years. However, caution and common sense must be used: aluminum is a soft metal that easily corrodes with unprotected exposure to water. The aqueous-base and alkalinity of Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner can accelerate the corrosion process.

Therefore, contact times for unprotected or unpainted aluminum surfaces should be kept as brief as the job will allow - never for more than 10 minutes. Large cleaning jobs should be conducted in smaller-area stages to achieve lower contact time. Rinsing after cleaning should always be extremely thorough - paying special attention to flush out cracks and crevices to remove all Simple Green product residues. Unfinished, uncoated or unpainted aluminum cleaned with Simple Green products should receive some sort of protectant after cleaning to prevent oxidation.

Simple Green has also developed break-through water based cleaners that are safe for use on metals, plastics, rubber and high tech alloys. Extreme Simple Green Aircraft & Precision Cleaner, Pro Series Simple Green Automotive Cleaner, and Simple Green Pro HD are available on both the industrial and retail markets, respectively. These products were initially developed for the aircraft industry and extensive testing shows that they are safe and effective on a variety of metals and other sensitive surfaces even in the most extreme circumstances.

Simple Green Stainless Steel One Step Cleaner & Polish is another option for cleaning polished aluminum. This product is designed for light duty metal cleaning and polishing.

Krud Kutter does a great job cleaning aluminum. I use my pressure washer at 4000psi with an after pump chem injector. I do a few roofs a year plus I have the painting contract for our local Goodyear. The tire shop corrugated ceiling is FN white. I end up washing with cutter at high psi in small sections while rinsing with a vinegar and water mix. .
