So, as the tile says, I am thinking about re-gearing my 2013 Tacoma. I have upgraded the tire size to 285/70/17’s and was wondering if this would be a big benefit for me. Truck is obviously a little slower with the larger size tires. Although I am supercharged so I don’t notice it as much. Main questions are, 1 is it worth it? 2 what size gears should I be looking at if I decide to do it? 3 what would I expect to pay? 4 will it be a noticeable difference?

    1. Only you can decide if it’s worth it.
    2. At least what ever it takes to get you back at/or above Stock RPM/MPH
    3. You should pay whatever it takes to get the job done right. The rear isn’t too bad if you do a drop in 3rd member. The front will be what cost the most.
    4. Absolutely, you will notice a difference.

Your truck came with 3.73:1 gears. Upsizing to 285/70/17's effectively changes that to 3.49:1. That is borderline IMO. 3.43 gears are the most common in 1/2 ton Chevy trucks and Ford uses 3.55 or 3.31 gears in most of their 1/2 tons. The new Tundra has 3.31's. If they work with similar gears your truck should too.

As it is your transmission will spend a little more time in lower gears and will shift out of OD more often. The biggest issue would be if you tow near the trucks weight limits. If you don't tow, I'd leave it alone.

Play around with this to see different options.

But that logic only applies if the Tacoma and the big full-sizes have the same engine/transmission, which they do not

I upgraded to 33s and noticed immediately that the drivetrain (4.0 - auto) behaved differently. It feels like it doesn't have the proper leverage against the wheels like it should. Both accelerating and engine braking. I also don't like being at 1,800 rpms while doing 65-70 on the highway

I'll be regearing to 4.10 or 4.30 asap

I made this video with the #1 shop here in Socal.

Check it out and it’ll answer most your questions!

    1. Yes
    2. 4.56 for 33’s, 4.88 for 35s
    3. $2000-3500 on average, depending when you go.
    4. Yes, absolutely

I put together 3 re-gear groupbuys now, 2 with Premier West Gears and 1 with Sibi (although this one isn’t exactly a groupbuy, but a discount). Over 150+ people! Regearing is the #1 mod I recommend.

Still comparing apples to oranges. The OP's truck in stock form has 3.73 gears, with the current tires will be about 3.49. Compared to stock that isn't a huge difference. To get back to where he was stock he'd need to regear to about 3.90. Splitting hairs IMO and not worth the cost. In your case if you go to 4.10 or especially 4.30 that is an improvement over stock even with the bigger tires.

AND, the OP says he is supercharged. Which does make it comparable to Fords turbo charged 2.7 V8 that comes with 3.31 or 3.55 gears. And 32" factory tires vs the 30.5" factory Tacoma tires.

The Ford has 10 transmission gears doesn’t it?
That probably helps make up for the High Gear ratio.

My truck is constantly lagging on shifting, and stays in high rpm’s way too long. It’s really annoying. I didn’t mention that I am on a stage 8 Icon setup, so +/- 3” lift with aluminum front bumper and steel rear bumper. The truck is built, and as such, heavy. I’m thinking this would fix a lot of problems for me.

This is precisely why re-gearing is essential.

Making changes to your original specs requires change.

The guys even suggest it coming from stock set-up.

Regearing sounds like it'd solve the issues you have!

Talk with Jason about 4.56 vs. 4.88 for your needs, and he may be able to provide you some further guidance.

do you realize those trucks have more powerful engines

and each 1/2/3/4/5 gear ratio inside the transmission is likely different as well

33’ on a Tacoma with 3.73 wants it to go up to at least 4.10. Period.

OP maybe you can buy some spare units to regear yourself in spare time and write a DIY
Instead of spending $3k for 1mpg taking 15 years to pay for itself

Regearing isn't like changing your oil. You should also recommend him to buy a spare axle for when he blows out the 3rd member because of some tolerance incorrectly set. Leave regearing to the professionals, especially a front IFS tacoma diff.
