Thinking about converting to a full size, what are my options now in terms of reliability?

I'm thinking about selling my 2018 tacoma and getting into a full size. My intital though was a new Tundra, but I understand they are having some growing pains with the new TT power plant.

I am considering a new 6.6 diesel or 6.2 silverado. Would anyone on here recommend a full size?

Can always buy a used 2018-2021 Tundra. Find one that has its coolant replaced at a reasonable time (like 60k) to reduce the likelihood of head gasket leaks.

When I sold my Tacoma and wanted to a full size vehicle I looked at them all in detail. I originally REALLY wanted a Tundra because I love Toyota but ended up eliminating it because it simply had a garbage payload (for my use).

So looking at the big 3 domestics in detail i definitely eliminated all diesel engines not only for the obscene cost they charge for them but also the weight, reliability, and maintenance. If you tow massive things this won’t apply but a modern diesel is a real piece of work.

Now looking at the big three gas engines I wanted simplicity and reliability above all else. But I also wanted power but gas mileage and efficiency wasn’t really a factor. It’s a full size truck after all.

Cylinder shutdown had no place in a work truck and had definitely caused problems for Ram over the years. All this said the Ford Super Duty trucks 100% for the bill for what I wanted.

I ordered a 2023 F350, 7.3L Godzilla, XLT Tremor, Sport, Premium Package. With X-plan I Paid $66.5k for it. Other wise the price of a Tacoma Trail Hunter lol. Difference is this truck has a 4214lb Payload, 4.30 gears, can tow almost anything, oh and it fits 37’s with no lift or problems whatsoever.

I do miss my Toyotas but this truck is a real truck. Toyotas are amazing but for the price they’re asking there’s a lot of options out there.

Now the only caveat to all this is that this isn’t a daily driver for me so gas mileage doesn’t matter. If you were going to commute with this beast something in between a Taco and an F350 might be a little more practical. Daily driving tasks are taken care of with my Lightning.

I was just watching this video on Toyota quality and reliability. It is very long but the guy makes some good points. If it is too long for you, he starts summarizing about 41 minutes in.

Assuming that's the 7.3 gas? I love the newer superdutys, very clean looking trucks. Now my company is always looking to save money so I've got a 23 7.3 gas service truck and I like the motor. Still a bit underpowered for a 16k lb 5500 but it's night and day from the pos 6.4 hemi 5500s we have. I imagine the 7.3 in a f250/ 350 would be a great setup. Wish I could justify one personally but about all I haul is ice fishing gear and dirtbikes.

Op just find a used tundra with the 5.7 and call it a day.

If I had to make this choice, I would find A Tundra. In the long run, the Toyota reliability will benefit you.

I am retired, but if I had a daily commute, I'd probably drive a Corolla.

Current diesel trucks have the entire under carriage loaded with smog control hardware.
When thieves steal this, the hardware alone is over $7,000, plus the extensive labor.

It seems every new truck and transmission in the modern EPA era has literally endless problems.
If I had $80k to spend for a new truck, I'd consider restoring an old truck with a reliable power plant and transmission.

Yes, it won't have all the high tech gadgets, but it would be reliable.

My son bought a brand new at the time, 23 Chevy Custom 2500 6.2L gas to haul his Tick spray rig which is a 250 gal tank. Within a year the engine was using 3 qts of oil between oil changes. After going back and forth with the dealership and Chevy, (they deemed this was a normal amount of oil consumption), he traded it in for a 24 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 6.4L hemi. He really likes the Dodge comparatively, just food for thought.

Yes 7.3L Godzilla. I have 4.30 gears and a 10 speed so honestly the truck is a beast, though obviously it’s no modern 1000ft/lb+++ diesel.

    IMG_1861.jpg

Mine hauls a camper around full time which has lifts and isn’t too heavy but crossing the Rockies is no problem that’s for sure.

    Was it a 1500 6.2 or a 2500 6.6?

    5.7 tundra or 150 eco.

unless you plan on hauling an equipment trailer or massive 5th wheel all over the country full time then get a diesel.

Diesel trucks are not practical and complete overkill for 99% of people who buy them.

We've had a lot of 6.4 hemi work trucks at my work and they are all garbage. Valve train issues like crazy. The ride compared to the f550 is night and day. I would steer clear of ram trucks.

This is what I was going to recommend a gas Super Duty for reliability and simplicity.

The mpg debates around the hybrid tacoma makes me wonder if a small turbo diesel that complies with emmisions could be a better engine for power and durability than a small gas turbo hybrid?

Even Toyota likes to throw around that commercial grade language.

Edit I have an ecoboost and think the gas 7.3 could be more reliable.

    I wouldnt touch a 2022+ tundra with a 10' pole.

Went to get some wiper inserts and saw a tundra at the dealer with the cab off the frame getting a new engine installed...

I think that 3.4TT V6 will not be reliable in long run at all. Plus the new tundra is so "plasticky". Thing doesnt even come with front tow hooks. Every single other full size comes with front tow hooks like it should... What a joke toyota.

I think you will be very happy with the silverado.
