thin wheel spacers on hub centric wheel

    Hey guys, I read a lot of posts on here and I’ve searched and searched and just can’t find the information I’m looking for.

    I got a great deal on some 4Runner wheels with basically brand new all terrain tires. I don’t have any clearance issues except for the fact that the fronts just barely and I mean just barely touch the top and bottom of the caliper. I can spin the tire freely when up on a jack you can just hear it tapping. I was looking for an extremely thin wheel spacer to move the wheel out maybe an 3-4mm to give it some extra space but the smallest I found was 6mm.


    So here’s my question. Is 6mm to far to push out the wheel and keep the wheel hub centric? These alloy wheels are definitely hub centric and I don’t want to create more issue than I have.
    Will upload a picture of the wheel I put on.

    Might sounds stupid, but depending on where the rim is rubbing against the caliper, I would opt to using a disk grinder and shaving it down just a hair... again depending on where it is rubbing on the caliper.

    So I ended up getting some washers that were all right at 2mm each. I checked each stack of three with my calipers and had a variance of .01mm. I used my drill press to bore them out to fit on the studs. After putting the 6mm spacing on it was incredibly hard to center the wheel due to the fact that the hub did not actually touch the inside of the wheel... they wheels are tapered off on the backside...

    the wheels use a mag seat lug and are actually pretty tight in tolerance and I think I got it centered using the lugs.
    Obviously I would not drive using the 6mm washer setup. I ordered some spacers that are 6mm, I don’t have them yet. The steelies are back on the front.

    so my question is being that the wheel is hub centric and not actually touching the hub at 6mm will that be fine because I’m using mag style lugs that centered the wheel?


    OR should I have one custom made at 4mm thick? I tested by removing one washer from each stud and it does hold on the hub and made putting the lugs in super easy.
    Thoughts?

    You should not take the advice of anyone else when it comes to your safety using wheel spacers, machining the wheels, or grinding on the calipers. I have my opinion on what I would do, but you need to make your own decision on what you feel is a safe solution.

    What would your opinion be? I will not grind the caliper. That’s not an option. I do not want to machine the wheels either.

    Sorry, not going to get into offering suggestions. Like I mentioned, you need to access the situation and do what you feel right about and accept responsibility for your actions. I don't mean to be rude, but if I say, "You should do ____________" and a wheel falls off or the brakes fail, then it's on me for making the suggestion.

    i'm not sure anyone is going to say that is ok. the wheel is designed to contact at the hub. you are saying it doesn't contact but the lugs are holding it centered, and is this good enough... is that right?

    Pretty much. I think I’m going to call up Motorsport tech and get him to custom make me one at 3mm thick. That way the wheel sits on the hub and I get clearance.

    Just grind the caliper, the way you are describing it you’d only have to take a minimal amount off.

    I believe the 3/8” spacer is the minimum to retain the hub centric function.

    You should probably just sell that set and get something that works for you.

    Not trying be a dick, but by going by some of my past experiences, sell those and get wheels that are meant and/or will work with your truck.

    Dont go modding stuff like that

    I used them on oem 4runner wheels to clear the uca with 285s. I believe all toyota wheels are lug/hub centric, i could never find a definitive answer to that! Its only a few dollars vs. having a machine shop fab it up for you for who knows how much

    I agree with this 100%. Depending on the cost of spacers you could probably come to close to just buying some wheels that fit if you sold those.

    I got my 3rd gen TRD OR take offs for $300 dollars on facebook marketplace.
