Thermostat temperature range question

my temperature on my engine seems to have a 10 degree swing which seems to be something new that it's been doing from 184 to 194 so I'm thinking my thermostat might not be working correctly ?
Usually my temperature is about 186 to 188, 190 max.
so I go down to the Toyota dealership and I have them look up the part number and ask him what the specifications are on that thermostat and the Toyota specifications say 182 to 195 degrees, so what does that mean? does that mean that's when it opens up completely and close completely? maybe my thermostat is actually okay.

It means that it will open between 182 degrees and and 195 degrees.

Only 12 degrees

If you want a thermostat that is precise to a degree I am sure for a Few Hundred dollars one could be made

 

The thermostat that I pulled out of the truck has a 184 on it and the replacement thermostat says 192 on it I'm confused what thermostat I'm to have for this truck now, I didn't know they have two temperature ratings two different options.
Both of these are Toyota parts unless I put the wrong thermostat in the thermostat box that I just bought

 

So if I get an aftermarket thermostat should I drill a hole in it for the Jigger valve

 

The 18 4 and 192 stamped on them have nothing to do with the temperature. Both are marked 82°C which is 179.6°F.

And thermostats will start to open at that temperature and fully open at a higher temperature closer to 200°F. They regulate the flow. You don't need full flow at around 185°F to maintain that temperature. The engine doesn't need to stay at a precise temperature.

 

And the repair manual says to put the jiggle valve at 6 o'clock in the V6 and members here swear the engine runs 10°F cooler compared to at the 12 o'clock position. If you're supercharged I don't know if you need a cooler thermostat, but I've read other superchargered members use a cooler thermostat.

 

I use a 170 degree Stant Superstat. It keeps my motor between 180-190. But usually around 183-185. I think my lower hose collapses sometimes raising temps for a short time.

The Superstat has a “special” bypass and a larger valve. The regular 170 stant didn’t lower temps at all. I was around 195-200 with that one.

 

Do you have a jigger valve on your 170 thermostat

 

The jiggle valve is just a bypass. It does have a bypass but it’s a little different.

 

Well I just took a test drive with my new 14.00 car quest 170 degree thermostat with no jigger valve on the highway.

Truck runs at 175 average so far with outside temp at 90 degrees.

35 Degrees of timing?? Are you letting off the gas when you snap the pic?

 

I wouldn’t want the temp any lower than 180 degrees. Anything below 180 and it starts to accelerate wear in the cylinders.

 

My question is “you were driving at 69 MPH and snapping Scangauge pictures”?

 

Well I bought a 170 and a 180 degrees thermostat each for 15.00 to see which one works better.
I called Gaget at URD and he told me I should run a 170 degress for Colorado with a supercharger
