When I visit South Padre Island for our TW annual beach run I always see the convoys of Toyotas with more Toyota engines and various parts in the towed beds. Lol damn they are going way south of the TX border.

I bet my pops 1996 is out there. Around 2007 according to car fax that truck was exported to Mexico.

there’s a supercharged 2.7l 5 speed manual reg cab 4x4 out there somewhere

@Jase great pics. Some of those streets look kinda sketchy. Reminded me of one of my all-time favorite guy movies, "Man on Fire" w/Denzel Washington: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4IjKjKcB8Y

If you've never seen it, definitely worth the time.

I wonder if those caravans of Tacomas would be coming back North if they saw the prices right now on some of the 1st gens....?

We watched that movie a couple nights ago! The first week we were up (down?) in the jungle our friend aired down to get the RAV4 we were riding in through a section of national park. Imagine a logging road with heavy daily traffic and regular heavy rain.

From my understanding prices for vehicles are crazy high there and these guys are making a pretty good buck on the trucks they buy. From what I have seen, they have zero interest in anything other than Toyota trucks. I couldn’t sell any of my Nissan hardbodies to the guy who paid retail for my 4wd pickup with a bad engine.
He showed up a few days later with another truck and a tow bar. Ten minutes and some used speaker wire later he had lights on the towed truck and he was off in a cloud of smoke.

There are sweet Toyotas all over Central America, but Guatemala definitely has the best. Would love to bring a Hilux or Land Cruiser back. Their ambulances would make a beautiful camper! Both the Land Cruisers are in El Salvador, not far from Guatemala.

Truth. They're everywhere. I was down there for Easter a few years back, and remember passing by this yard on the drive from Lake Atitlan to Guatemala City that was just packed with Toyota trucks.

On the bus from Guatemala City to Quezaltenango I saw a car lot that I swear was all first gens. Wonder if it was the same one?

I did Guatemala City to Antigua to Panajachel (CA-1->10->14->CA-1->1) and then back to Guatemala City (1->CA-1), but I think GC to Quetzaltenango is just on CA-1 (unless it took a more roundabout route). There is some overlap there, of course, so maybe. Looking at the map and how I'm remembering the drive, I want to say it was in either Patzicia or Patzun, though.

These are popular because of the Toyota reputation and are available with 4cyls which are more fuel efficient and easier to repair. Some guys will buy two and tow one of them and pack both trucks full of stuff to sell or take back to their homes. Sometimes they will sell one or both trucks at the border and sell their catalytic converters and weld a straight pipe in place. Then they come back and buy more trucks to do it again.
