According to KBB, the trade-in value on my 2017 TRD Sport is somewhere between $34,300 and $36,998. The dealership where I purchased my truck three years ago has an identically spec-ed 2020 TRD Sport, even the same color, listed for sale at $37,000. So theoretically, I could walk in with my trade, and drive off the lot with a brand new truck for less than $3,000. That just can't be correct. Someone help me understand what I'm missing here.

Yes, they have extremely high resale,,,,,, that said, the dealer is more than likely going to use black book, so they won't be giving you that much. Resale is crazy right now due to shortage, so who's knows? Try em out

Something like $26k or lower would be far more realistic for a 2017, depending on condition.

My 2017 off road with only 25k miles books trade-in at like 27K. Your value seems high just my opinion which isn’t worth much.

I keep getting mailer offers from my local dealership on my $39k MSRP 2018 DCSB OR. When I do the math I figure they are offering me ~$29k. They don’t say that of course, but they estimate my loan balance and I can reverse engineer it from there given their offset from real loan balance.

Where are you getting this value from? Curious because I have the same mileage.

I just drove up to NC to pick this up yesterday. Sitting looking at it through the window of the breakfast place. One of the last three TRD Off Roads on the lot and the only Long Tom. Paid just a hair under $38k with dealer fees, SC $500 capped tax and title paperwork. Prices are at all time highs but I'm mid 40s and tired of not having the things I want. I transfered tags from my GMC 4x4 which he gave me about 4-5% less than I could have gotten on AT if I had been patient (by which time I wouldnt have gotten the truck I wanted and he knocked some off the new Taco so I didnt care) Inventories are low and low mileage clean 4x4 trade ins are hot right now because people dont want to pay $40k for a new midsize truck when you can wait till September and get a left over Supercrew F150 4x4 for $35k That said, used Tacoma prices are pretty stupid and just because someone else will pay $22000 for a 10 year old truck with 200k on the ODO doesnt mean I would.

That $37k listed price at your dealer probably isnt including his $800 fee, taxes, tags and title. A new vehicle should be a once a decade goal unless you get a lemon IMHO

Tacoma's have high resale value because people are willing to pay the price. Tacoma does has a good reputation, though it seems the 3gen has a few more issues compared to other generation Tacoma's. If I was shopping for a 1-3 year old Tacoma and saw that the price for used was within a few thousands of new. I would not purchase the used vehicle.

When people stop paying premium prices for a used vehicle, the prices will eventually come down.

Vehicle market is crazy right now I’ve heard. KBB for my truck in my area. Don’t want to sell it at all but if a dealer would give me 34k+ for it sure would make me think about it

Mine is low. $21-23k trade in, $24-26k private party. Probably because it has 56k miles on it.

As others have said, I think region plays a part in used values. If there's a high demand for a vehicle and inventory is low, the value will be higher. I traded my 2017 TRD OR 4x4 with premium and tech back in November and got right at $30k trade in. It had a little over 30,000 miles. $34k seems a bit high on trade, but I guess you never know until you get all of the numbers in front of you.

A lot of dealers will offer a good number on trade or the new vehicle, but not both. It took awhile to find someone that would give a decent price on a 2020 Tacoma AND give me a decent number on trade. I drove 5 hours to get it, but it was definitely worth it.

Stock AF. My 68 Bronco and 2000 2.5RS get the mods.
Aaaaand that's how I ended up with a 2020 and the situation was the same when my wife bought her 2015 Crosstrek brand new.

Save $1800 but have 30,000mi and a half eaten warranty and a questionable history? No thanks, ill get exactly what I want and pay a hair more.

The way taxes work here I'd need to sell my old vehicle for about 10% more than they offer in trade just to break even. I'd need to get 20-25% more to be worth the trouble.

I bought a 1996 Tacoma Xtracab brand new when they first came out, in late 1995. Paid cash. I meticulously take care of my stuff, and so, when I sold it in April of 2019, it still looked like new inside and out. It had 177,000 miles, barely broken in! Anyway, even though it looked 'new', the dealers were going by the "blue book", which I hate, and I knew they would. Dealers nowadays do not want old vehicles on the lot. They offered me between $2500-2700, and even then, they flat out told me they would just send it to auction. I talked with several dealers, and they all pretty much told me the same thing, which I already knew, besides the offer price, they all said I should just sell it myself as I would get more money. Again, I knew that, but at the time, I just didn't feel like doing it. Still though, I was NOT going to GIVE my truck away for that price! So, I reluctantly, put it up for sale on craigslist and facebook marketplace. I put pics and video, and actually told people to just drive by and look at it, as I gave the address of where it was parked. I then said that if interested, to then call me and I would be glad to show it to them. No pressure. I also said in the ad, that despite the great pics and video, that I didn't want anyone to believe me, but to come by and see it for themselves, and they would then know how great it was. Anyway, after 5 days, one guy actually did that, he drove by, on his brand new motorcycle, and was looking at it, as I just happened to be taking the garbage cans out to the street. I asked if he was interested, and he said he was. He told me that indeed, he couldn't believe that my truck would look as good as the pics, so he came by to see for himself. Long story short, after a test drive around the block, he said he realized then, why my "asking price" which I had posted in the ads, of $6995 for a 1996 Toyota Tacoma Xtracab, was as high as it was. He then offered me $6700 CASH right there on the spot! I accepted. Just over two and a half times what the dealers had offered me! So, it worked out, but in looking back, I had paid $13500 cash out the door, for that truck, back in November of 1995 when I bought it. So selling it, 23 years later, and getting $6700 for it, well, I mean, dang! I got back almost exactly HALF of what I paid for it, just over 23 years earlier! So yeah, I am a believer that Toyota Tacomas DO hold their value. The local dealer just offered me $34,000 for my 2019 TRD Sport, and I paid $38,000 cash out the door in April of 2019. Of course, anyone who has seen my videos out there, knows I have also put in another $3000 or so, with the custom interior, and all the mods. I buy my vehicles and I keep them. I told the salesperson when I bought my truck, that I would see her again in 23 years!

Great story and you definitey did great with that truck but $13500 back then is like $24000 in todays money. Thats why I get so pissed when CNN tries to bullshit people about how "Warren Buffet pays a lower tax rate than his secretary". Thats only true on short term capital gains over a certain threshold of profit. Most gains are long term and yeah, they only tax you at 15% but they dont allow you to adjust your purchase price for inflation when calculating your "profit". In other words they tax you on money you didnt even make. But at a "lower rate than Warren Buffets secretary"

If you wanted to get rid of your current truck and upgrade to the 2020 you will make out better by selling private party. You will always get more than the dealer wants to give you. That's what I did my 2010 I sold it private party and got $3,500 more than dealer offered
