The most waterproof Hard Tonneau (tri-fold or rolling) for a 2016 Tacoma?

Hello, I have been lurking these forums for many days now to get a clear answer but the information is a little scattered as you can understand.

I have owned my brand new Tacoma for a few months and I live in... Tacoma, WA. So you can imagine that if I put a tonneau on the back it absolutely has to be as waterproof as reasonably possible or there will be no point because we get ungodly amounts of rain. I understand no single tonneau design will be completely sealed from the elements but I am interested in whichever is closest.

I have an access cab and right now I want to utilize the truck bed to store miscellaneous items to free up the back seats and if you live in my neighborhood you know you can't trust people not to jack things out of the back if they just sit there.

So I am most interested in a rolling or folding hard tonneau that has reasonable security (as opposed to a dude just smashing my cab window) and the best weather sealing out there.

Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe the Bak G2, but I don't want to drill out the drain holes in my brand new truck bed. The Extang 2.0 Solid Folder looked promising as well but there are gap/fitment issues with the bed caps and will leak.

Any input would be appreciated!! :)

I like my Extang 2.0. There will be minor water issues with all of them but overall I have had little issues.

Look at fold a cover. They are releasing it for the 2016 in a week or so. It can leak a bit. That can be fixed with a bit of foam stuff etc. Solidly made cover.

Honestly, only a full fiberglass one that has the lip over the sides will is your best option.

@Conumdrum Why besides the seperate locking feature of the FoldACover do you recommend it over Extangs offerings?

I have the same question. I just bought a 2014 DCLB and really like the solid tri-fold tonneaus. I am trying to decide between the Extang 2.0 and the Undercover Flex. I like the low profile of the Flex, but it doesn't look like it folds back right behind the cab, the way the Extang 2.0 does. My friend says she just lifts the front and puts her groceries right there in front of her cargo divider. On the other hand, the Flex can open all the way up and you can drive with it propped up.

Does anybody have any feedback/experience with these tonneaus?

If you 'really' want a cover that is 100% dry and secure, stay away from all brands that are fold/slide/rolling etc. as there isn't a single product out there that sheds all the water .... go with a solid fiberglass type lift tonneau ....... here's an instance where 'you get what you pay for' ...there may be limits with this type of cover I'll give you that .......

Yeah my buddies either have solid tonneaus or canopies and swear by them but I'm a small dude and can't lift them off on my own. I figured a folding/retractable/rolling tonneau would be a good jack of trades given its limitations. I'm trying to get feed back on what people like the most and why.

I agree. Only the full cover one like in the picture is 'dry'. Still have to gasket around the tailgate.

    @Argentum

Well I have a fold a cover, the elite. I live in the desert and hardly use mine at all. It's more of a grocery/shopping cover. No need to take mine off. One person can easily remove it once the 4 bolts are off. It folds into 4 pieces, and gives most of the already small bed to be used. Never used the opening by the cab yet.

And I installed mine in December 2015, so I'm not a long time user for sure.

I spent a long time, months reading reviews here and other places, I liked what I saw. That's my reasoning to suggest it. Ohh, the bed cleats can be used on this cover also. Not like the Extang, you can't. Sits too low.

Tacoma is a nice place. Want to retire possibly in the Lacey area, near the military complex since I'm retired AF.

You can use the bed cleats with the Extang Solid-Fold cover.

That a new one? Looks decent. I consider Extang the 'other' option, good cover. Pricey! Haven't seen the 2016 price on the Fold a Cover yet tho.

The G4 Elite is $820 with free shipping, believe there's a $25 off promo floating around here on TW.

Check out the Undercover products. They are ABS plastic. Light... and good covers. Very dry. You can lift these by yourself. I think my SE model is 65 pounds.

This is the SE on a Long bed

My main concern is being able to get it off by myself, not water tightness. Although that is important too.

@Conumdrum The South Sound is a pretty nice area, and I am not sure if you have been here lately but the population has exploded with the tech surge in Seattle. As such there are pockets here that you really ought to avoid.

The Olympia/Lacey area overall is very nice, smallish, and mostly secluded from the rest of that. Dupont/Steilacoom just north of the base is small and nice too. I would stay away from Lakewood, Parkland, or South Tacoma at all costs unless you like gun fights in the middle of the street.

What I like about the Extang is that there are 4 easy to open attach points. It is very easy to remove by yourself. I was going to get one of the flush type covers until I watched videos on YouTube on how easy to break into.

+1 on comments about Lakewood, Parkland, South Tacoma

I watched some YouTube vids too. I am leaning towards the UnderCover Flex due to the ability to open it up all the way without having to remove it. You can also drive with it in the 'all the way up' position.

I'l proolly try to stay South of the military base area. Within 30 min is fine. Looks like the mentioned areas is too much tech workers/money and a budding drug trade to support all the tech folks at 21 years old working 24/7 up North, hehe.

Thanks, it's sooo green up there. Pretty country.
