The 2021 Toyota Hilux is impressive, makes the Tacoma look like a Camry. :(

I really really really wanted a VW Amarok. But we cannot get them in the US:frusty: So the Tacoma is a good alternate. I really like the Taco now. Especially since you can personalize it.

I used to work for Cummins some years ago and I can tell you that diesel and -40 don't mix well (i live up in Alberta Canada) no matter who makes them. Injectors extremely expensive to replace...sure with proper and meticulous maintenance they can do 800.000k to a million or more but so can a good maintained gasoline engine. So if a gasoline engine is well designed and owner uses premium synthetic engine oils and ethanol free gasoline, cooling kept up...a gasoline can go nearly as long as a diesel.

I have to ask why do you or anyone else for that matter dislike the composite bed? Diesels make them hard to import due to emission regs and they require strict maintenance as opposed to gas engines. Most American don't really take real good care of their vehicles and you won't get away with that for long with a diesel. Don't get me wrong I have owned VW turbo diesels they have their place I drove 100 miles a day to work and loved the 50 mpg but even doing my own work it was expensive to maintain and you can't just say I'll get around to it next month.

I believe you are right on both points. The 4th Gen Taco will see the new frame and uprated capacities.

The common thing I see in this thread is the belief that Toyota USA is a bunch of morons. I'm sure they have spent a TON of time doing market research in the USA. Hence the North America only Tacoma's and Tundras. Same with the Nissan Frontier and Titan.

Small turbo diesels with a lot of torque but are slow don't sell well here. Ford has one in the overseas Ranger and chose not to bring it here. Nissan has one in the Navara and chose a 4 ltr V6 for the US. And didn't GM kill the small duramax in the Colorado?
Unless you haul heavy loads regularly diesels here are more costly to maintain, and the better gas milage is pretty much null with the higher fuel cost. At least around my area.

Need more cargo or towing capacity? Buy a Tundra. The full size 1/2 ton or larger market has you covered.

Composite bed not strong enough? Toyota has been running them in the Tacoma's for years. Not many complaints here on TW, the most vocal user group.
Ford changed to Aluminum, and GM is going to composite as well.

As for the looks, personally I don't mind the look of the new HiLux, Navara, or the Ranger. But again, in the land of the free a truck has to be squared off with a flat hood and had to be named something that conjures images of the wild west.

I'm not hating, mind you. I love my Tacoma, and have no real complaints. I think the overseas truck are awesome and while personally I would consider buying one if available, I have no illusions about them selling well enough in the North American market.

Bingo. These Toyota diesels are the solution to a problem we don't have in the US. Most people that complain about the Tacoma's shortcomings should have bitten the bullet and bought a Tundra. For my money, that's the US version of the Land Cruiser pickup. If they badged it Land Cruiser no one would doubt it for a second. That being said, I would buy a Hilux tomorrow if it was available, and when I get rid of my Taco it will be to trade it for a 70 series Ute if I can find a sucker...I mean, a willing participant.

Well if you were towing with the Tacoma you would be safe because you would not even be able to leave your home with it hooked up to a trailer. The Tacoma is horrible for towing with a torque peaking at a high RPM. The Tacoma engine is geared towards more for passenger cars than trucks. The Hilux would eat the Tacoma in a towing match, especially uphill.

This guy couldnt leave his driveway until he put it in 4x4 low due to the engine not having any torque down in the low rpms and bogging down (again not good for a truck to have peak torque in the upper rpms). This is dangerous especially people having manual transmissions, can burn up your clutch very quickly.

There is a reason why commercial trucks have a very flat torque cruve at almost idle. The Hilux has the same flat torque curve.

I've discussed this in other threads. Diesels are different. The 3.5 in the new Tacomas hit peak torque within 600 RPM of every gas V8 and V6 truck engine on the market right now. The only outliers are the 5.7 Tundra and the 3.5 Ecoboost being around 3600 RPM peak torque. Even 4.0 - 3.5 Tacomas are only 200 RPM apart. The data is in the chart below. Ford Coyote engine hits max torque at a higher RPM than the 4.0 Tacomas. 3rd gen trucks got a 3.6:1 first gear and 2nd gen trucks got 3.52:1 first gear with same axle ratios and nearly same peak torque. It is 99% the factory transmission tuning. The problem we really have is that in America (USA/Canada) most truck buyers want fuel economy and comfort, only commute, never haul anything and the market caters. So the rest of us have to reprogram, tune, add leafs, and re-gear just to get the trucks to do what they were intended to do in the first place.

I can't view the video cause I'm at work, but I think its the one in Colorado or Utah with the black 3rd gen manual?

I haven;t towed more than ~3500lbs with this truck yet, I have been dragging my feet with the brake controller. But it doesn't seem nearly as bad as what some people make it out to be.

Those commercial trucks got steep gear ratios to help along with the diesel low end torque. Most commercial trucks have a axle ratio steeper than 5.29.

As far as 4low with a trailer, my uncle has a 6.7 Cummins 1 ton and tows a 14k lb travel trailer with it. He has used 4low to maneuver in certain situations in a truck with 950 ft lbs at 1500 RPM. Nearly everybody I have been around towing, including myself has used 4low at one point or another in diesel and gas trucks. I used it with my 5.7 Tundra and a 7k dump trailer. Using 4low doesn't mean the truck is bad or under powered, it means it had the tools to do what you ask of it. Ridgeline's don't have 4low and are geared worse, he wouldn't have made it out at all in one of those, that would make it a bad truck for the application.

edit: closest we are going to get in a Taco vs Hilux comparo https://tfltruck.com/2017/03/gas-or...-canyon-diesel-towing-mpg-and-0-60-mph-video/

The 3rd Gen V6 actually has steeper axle ratio's, the 2nd Gen had 3.73 whereas the 3rd has 3.91 for AT and 4.30 for MT

Yep, Dumb Gringos hosed again. Obviously the Hilux is a superior value compared to the Tacoma. Dumb Gringos have too much fake wealth and not enough brains.

Wife has rich family in UEA . They come to California once in a while for visits. They are totally into off-road back there , have 2016 land cruisers (two), hilux 2017 and a GM H2. When they saw our 2018 USA Tacoma, they said it looks and drives way better vs their hilux . They wanted to buy ours and ship it back home lol.

I think people always want what they can’t have lol. I hear overseas people love the taco much more and we always talk about the “legendary” hilux with its diesel.....

Edit*. Living in San Diego I actually see a lot of hilux trucks driving around that come up with Baja plates. They look really ugly. Imagine the new ranger crossed with a sprinter van. The whole truck looks like a wedge of Swiss cheese.
