That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

It took some digging but here's proof of concept. Y'all better get to HF before word gets out and all the ATV winches are gone!

After watching a Warn M8000 stall with a 2:1 MA doing shit I'll probably do again I opted for the Comeup 12.5RS on my Land Cruiser. Yeah its a big ass winch. Yeah I've buried 37s completely before. I will also be bringing my family with me more and more on trips and setting up a 4:1 rigging while the family is in a creek or something is not smart. Everytime you add MA you add another failure point, more neccessary gear, and weight as well. I choose to carry my weight on my winch, you carry it in extra rigging for your smaller winch. Who gives a shit?

I bet after your 8k winch burns up mine with 4500 pounds more pulling power without any MA will be welcome to hook up to you and help get you un-mired.

On my father's FJ Cruiser I'm helping him build I recommeded the Comeup 9.5RS, since he its a smaller rig.

At that point you may as well just use a come-a-long.

True MA would be using some pipe to make the lever longer.

An ATV winch with mechanical advantage would have worked great for my truck in December

@TomHGZ in all seriousness, have you ever been in a situation where there are no winching points (i.e., trees), the other truck cannot recover itself and/or does not have a winch, and the truck winching it out must winch from a good distance away for safety reasons such as a muddy steep hill or adjacent drop offs/cliffs?

I have and your method would not have been possible.

No, this needs to continue and never stop. An ATV winch for a 4500 lb pickup, that's a big-brained idea right there.

Remember pulleys in physics I vs pulleys in statics and dynamics? Haha you could make a squirrel pull your truck out with the right set-up! It’s all frictionless and made of rainbows! There’s forty trees spaced perfectly apart for it, too!

If you only ever wheel in the Western Sierras with big trees everywhere this might work, if slow as pointed out. But I've managed to get my truck stuck
    • in a swamp (nothing to grab, needed a F350 to get me out),
    • at the top of a steep hill with no anchor points uphill within 50 ft of the truck (took an extension line and several tree savers)
    • on slippery rocks on a creek trail (a quick 2' pull, took longer to respool the winch then to get unstuck)
    • on Rose Garden Hill in Moab (wrapped a tree saver around a rock and posted a watch to make sure it didn't move)
    • on top of a boulder in Sierra NF (took an extension and a snatch block for MA!!)
    • in a mudhole on the other side of a collapsed dirt canyon wall (took one truck pulling and two anchoring it)
    • several other times that were less exciting, plus that time my truck took a nap but my truck didn't help itself back over
I've used my 8k winch at the outside edge of it's capability several times and I didn't like it. But I have an aluminum bumper and synthetic line so the setup weighs less than my cooler stuffed with beer and ice.

Nobody's mentioned this the working rating of a winch is at the drum the more wraps the load goes down and with an atv winch significantly. Plus will you have enough line on an atv I've had some recoveries where we'd be out almost the full length of line on a 9.5k winch. If not enough Length that's a crap ton more extensions, straps, blocks, etc you'd need to carry. Also the gear box and motor in an atv winch is much smaller easier to over heat and kill the gears even with the "mechanical advantage". Show some true real world experiences to your theory and I'll believe it.

This dude mechanical engineer with real world experiences! I think I'll trust an engineer with application and my experiences over some engineering student with no true application.
