Today a member posted about a starting/dying problem in a 2009 Tacoma PreRunner in the 2nd Gen forum. The title of the thread is 2009 tacoma starts up and then dies. I was suspicious of a fuel starvation problem. I got to thinking about it. It's also possible that the Fuel Pump Relay - FPR - is the culprit. Maybe not the most likely cause, but something to think about.

Rather than add this info to that thread I thought I'd post up my findings for testing the Fuel pump Relay in a 1GR-FE engine in a separate thread.

As per jimmyh - the 2TR-FE 4 cylinder engine does not have an FPR. For that application, the C/OPN relay serves as an FPR. You might be able to use the same approach below to test the FPR in a 2TR-FE engine, assuming there is another relay in the fuse box with the same part number as the C/OPN relay.

My Tacoma is a 2015 1GR-FE PreRunner. I dug up the relay schematic from the 2005-2006 Factory Service Manual(FSM) that's been mentioned at TW 1000s of time. Page 5 contains under-the-hood-fuse box info. I then got into my fuse box under the hood and found that the '05-'06 diagrams line up closely with what I have.

I took a photo of the inside of my box(see below). The Fuel Pump Relay is #14 in the relay diagram. Part number 90084-98032 TN156700-1062. In my photo I have written FPR on this relay.

In the lower right hand corner of the photo you will see a like-colored relay(brown). It's part # is the same as the FPR. I have written VSC on it. The relay diagram shows this to be STOP LP CTRL Relay (w/VSC).

Comments about this relay are in the following thread. Look at what jimmyh has to say about it:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/missing-stop-lp-ctrl-relay-critical.423733/

and read here for more information:

I'm not suggesting that anyone forego safety, but it's my belief you could swap these 2 relays in order to eliminate the Fuel Pump Relay as a suspect. The VSC relay in the lower right hand corner of the fuse box is part of skid control. One never knows when skid control might be needed. Using cautious driving habits, you might be able to live w/o it while you run the Fuel Pump Relay circuit off this VSC relay.

Those who do not have VSC will likely not have this relay in the fuse box under the hood.

Why not just remove the relay and test it like any other relay??

It's a whole lot faster to swap a suspect relay with another. Take 10 secs. Testing on a bench with a meter is OK if you're at home.

I can test one along side of the road just as well.

Any more if the truck quits it goes home on a roll back
