Just installed EBC slotted rotors and Greenstuff pads. Upon completion of install, I went for a quick test drive and all seemed fine until I brought the vehicle to a halt in my driveway. There was a shudder and sickening grunt. Driver’s side rotor looks fine but passenger rotor is pictured below:
    83DC6934-BD94-41C3-BCE6-2DCBB94FE4BB.jpg

Any idea what could’ve caused this? tearing the truck back down now for diag.

Any help would be much appreciated.

What did the pads look like when you took them out?

Pretty sure thats normal. Black shit comes off once you start using the brakes.

Edit: you need to bed in the pads/rotors. There are guidelines to break it all in. I'd expect odd brake behavior for the first few hundred miles.

No coating will withstand braking in contact with the friction material (the brake pad).

Did you follow the recommended break-in for new pads and rotors?

New brakes are going to groan and shudder at low speeds ( like coming to a stop) before they get broken in, its really common. Especially the more aggressive pad compounds. Follow the brake in procedure listed in the instructions and it will smooth out

love slotted rotors on race cars, but I will stick to factory rotor and pads on my Tacomas.

Apparently it’s normal...no other issues other than the described groaning at slow speed coming to a halt. Checked everything out and no cause for concern yet.

Silly question, but, are the pads in upside down? I'm not sure those little ears are supposed to be facing the hub.

Was the only way to line up the holes for the pins on the top side of the caliper. I thought it looked strange too but that’s the same direction that the old pads came out, the old ones just didn’t have the small ears on them. It’s dark now and the truck will sit for the night and I’ll re-visit the issue in the morning.

    First, hello,

Next, did you clean and grease the pads? If not, there is part of the noise. You need to grease the backing plates and the guide runners. Next, something looks off. On the front (top of caliper in the pic) it looks like a wire or something is sticking out. Did you install the rattle springs and pin clips correctly?

EBC pads are bleh, there are better pads, every time I had to put em in bikes the made noise within a couple of miles. The semi-metallic nature of the compound is what does it. They are the cheaper of high performance brake pads.

I will probably get blasted for saying that, but truth is truth. Brembo pads, akibono, performance friction are way better with almost no noise, you pay dearly for that.

I’m leaning towards no grease more than anything.

Honestly it is tough to diagnose brakes without physically seeing and touching them.

    Hope this helps.

Both sides should be similar. The noise, and sometimes the smell, is normal until you bed your brakes. It take more than 500 miles to proper “bedding” these brakes. The key for disk brakes is installation. Everything must be super clean. Poor alignment (due to dirty/rust) will cause vibration and ruin your set up. I used EBC parts a couple of times and they worked great.

    Good luck

I run the EBC slotted and dimpled rotors with the yellow stuff pads. I though they were one of the best upgrades i did. Make a remarkable difference stopping with a load. Strongly recommend you follow the bedding procedure as best you can per instructions.

I appreciate all of the feedback guys. I have since tore the truck back down and applied a little more grease than I had originally which seems to have solved the noise issue. I now have approx. 100 miles on them and everything seems to be working perfectly. Really excited to put them to the test on a hard stop after I surpass the 500 mile mark.

Having caused a set of Brembo rotors to develop runout with the TRD semi-metallic Pads (where I followed TRD's hard-slow down break in recommendation), I'd recommend breaking the rotors in slowly by driving normally, avoiding hard braking and not dragging the brakes for the first 500 miles (about a week). (partially caused by sticky pistons(s), also caused partially by my intentional hard brake use).

I'm now on Stoptech GCX rotors w/ Carquest Ceramic Platinum Premium (of all brands!) and so far so good for the first couple hundred miles.

Cant say im confident in your ability to do a break job considering the spring perch on your 6112's is upside down....:eek::eek: Fix that ASAP so the retaining ring is actually captured!!!

nada....maybe a license plate one day & BA bumpers
I ran my factory original front brake pads/rotors for 150k miles
    replaced with OEM's at 150k, 225k, & most recently at 300k
never had an issue with the factory brake setup or felt they needed upgrading
to each their own, as this is a free country, but I humbly say the stock brakes are fine

side note - im still running the factory original rear brakes at 306k miles
they are due for replacement though, trying to make it to 325k before I do the rears dumb, sorry drum brakes
I wish our truck had rear disc brakes!

I tried EBC Green on a Jeep once and it took a little while for the odd sound to go away but it did . Something sticks in my mind they had some kind of friction material that would wear away but I remember it couldn't happen soon enough
