    Hey guys,

Installed an afe stage 2 cold air intake a couple weeks ago. Since then, Ive been getting significantly WORSE gas mileage. Went from about 17-18 down to 13-14... Only extra weight I have is a camper shell, but thats been on since even before I installed the new intake. It has gotten quite a bit colder here than usual (about 20-35 degrees) but I dont think thats the whole cause. My MAF sensor threw a code even before I installed the intake as well but everything has seemed to be running great so far... More power ad throttle response but getting 138 miles out of a half tank is a little rediculous... Anyone have any ideas what could be going on?

Clean or replace your MAF....... Try to reset the ECU..... MPG should be the same.....
But if anything put the stock one back on to see if it persist....

Have you been romping the throttle a little more with the new intake?

Cai can affect the way the air flows over the hot wire. Or your maf is bad, if it coded recently it's probably bad

More air from the CAI plus the colder, denser air from the ambient temp will do it. That's every reason for your ECU to need to add fuel.

Not anymore than I did with the stock intake. I usually dont romp on it unless I have to .

Hopefully this is whats going on. Just sucks because I thought I would atleast have the same mpgs as before. Even last year in even colder weather I was getting better mileage with stock. I guess could chalk it up to more idle time for warm up too?

Toyota is going to say the CAI is causing the problem.

Install the original intake and then take it to Toyota.

Did anyone mention winter blend fuel mix? My MPGs dropped by almost 2 on the last fillup. I'm assuming they switched to winter blends around now.

What Jimmy said,Toyota will say put the stock parts back on! Again hardly any aftermarket items for the motor ever work better than stock parts do.

When I bought my 2015,I changed too a locking gas cap, within a day my truck was throwing a code, took it too Toyota and they said put the stock cap back on,I did and no more codes, crazy how a part made for a specific truck by a aftermarket manufacture will not work on your truck.

You know the truck came stock with a CAI, right?

To take advantage of more air flow in, you need to boost it, increase fuel flow, and increase air flow out.

    1. Disconnect negative terminal from your battery.

    2. Remove the MAF from the new CAI and spray it with some MAF cleaner.

    3. Reinstall MAF and double check all hose clamps are tight on your CAI.

    4. Reconnect negative terminal to your battery.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

If doing the above doesn't change a thing with your fuel economy, then repeat the above but reinstall your stock intake system instead of the AFE. And then reassess your fuel economy.

Good luck and report back any discoveries!

I know a lot of people think that its pointless to put a CAI on these trucks, but its something I wanted to do and got a great deal on a used one. Just trying to trouble shoot, that's all. If anyone has a tutorial for checking the MAF sensor with a multimeter that would be awesome. I don't have much experience with wiring, etc so I would like to learn. I know how to use a multimeter so any assistance with which wires to probe and the correct readings would be awesome. Will also try running the stock intake for a tank or so of gas to see if the CAI is indeed the problem... Thanks guys

The best way to test a MAF sensor is to purchase a small cheap code reader that will let you look at some data while driving. You can look at grams per second and also the calculated load will be helpful. However, if the problem is intermittent you will need to catch it in the act. As I stated before, just the fact that the maf coded is a huge clue that it is on the fritz
