Teaching the daughter to drive in my lifted Tacoma. Only vehicle available to me except a sports car which is less of an option. Surprisingly it is gone pretty smoothly except teaching to park and parallel park is rather difficult. I’m leery of handing it over for the driving test though

Time, miles, and variety are her friend. Check with your insurance carrier and see whether it offers discounts, class recommendations, etc.

Practice and proper technique. Work with her to build her confidence and skills. I initially learned to drive on a 78 VW Bug and for a few weeks was subjected to practicing in my grandfathers 72 Buick Electra 225. Once I could successfully master parallel parking that land yacht, I didn't break a sweat during my drivers test.

Every person is different - patience, work on the weaknesses and work through the weaknesses gradually. A lifted tacoma is no different than a chevy chevette if you have the training/experience. Find a wide open lot, grab some cones and spend the time to build the skills. It isn't rocket surgery. Stay positive and let her build her confidence.

I remember when my Dad taught me to drive when I was 14.

Dad: Here are the keys to the truck, Go pull that 10 acres of peanuts and put them in the shed.

Me: I don't know how to drive yet.

Dad: Don't worry about it. You will know how when you're done with that 10 acres.

    He was correct. LOL

My niece asked me not too long ago if she could learn to drive with my truck.
I have no objection to it, I’d rather her drive what she feels more comfortable with.
Plus, I don’t really get upset about much. Practice is what will make them better.

If you think her driving makes you nervous, just wait until she wants to go out by herself.
Then move out and get married. This is nothing, hand her the keys and enjoy the time while you have it!

A good parking teaching tool, hot wheels. You can explain when the right rear tire is here, turn. Visual aids are helpful.

Yeah, its gonna be a long slow summer. Hour and a half every day after work driving with her. I figure after a month or so she should be ready for the test.

What I’ve noticed now is they no longer want the kids to pass. One even told my nephew you’re not passing today before the test even began. So warn her ahead of time so she doesn’t feel like she failed.

My '07 tacoma was the best choice, as the '15 Sienna minivan was more of a boat for my daughter. Time behind the wheel, regardless of vechicle type, is what each kid needs. Those that do not drive alot with their parents before Driver's Ed pay the price (so does the Driver's Ed Instructor).

Does MO not offer a learner's permit? When I learned to drive here in CO it was a few parking lot sessions with my parents then a year with a permit at age 15. We got our training done by running a years worth of errands and a couple road trips with our parents in the passenger seat, then rolled into our driving tests on our 16th birthday (after the driver's ed classroom course and driving with a professional instructor in a beat up Saturn).

If your Tacoma is an automatic, I wouldn't sweat it. Confidence and an understanding of how the vehicle functions are very important. For instance, knowing how engine braking works and why you wanna do it in inclement weather or hilly terrain is rare these days, but can make a big difference in keeping people safe.

A couple of key points to DRIVE home while teaching.

    Eyes up and moving.

Distracted driving. The causes and consequences. Causes can be as simple as adjusting the radio volume or talking with passengers or the cell phone. Consequences can be as severe as death or as minor as a scratch or ticket.

People say they can multi-task. This claim has been disproven numerous times. Try a simple test. You sign your name often, easy task. You can say the alphabet, easy task. Now, do both at the same time......... the brain can do time slices on multiple tasks.

Remember, at 60 mph......you travel 88 feet/sec. Human reaction time is roughly 0.250 seconds, at 60 mph, you will travel about 22 feet or the length of the truck before applying brakes, then you have the braking distance to stop from 60 mph. A short distraction will consume a great deal of distance..................

My son started driving my truck last summer...he was 5 at the time. I figure he'll have it down pretty good by the time he's 16.

My dad used to let me drive home from fishing when i was around 12-13 didn’t realize at the time he was to drunk.. it was a couple miles from the house. And never got stopped. I truly believe it made be a better driver today. Cause when I went for my test i had to use a 75 caddy elderado big f- ing car . I passed. Confidence is key.

Be careful. My daughter totaled her first Tacoma within 80 days of getting her license. With the second one, she immediately took out a Sonic menu sign. Ugh.

I was taught how to drive in my dad’s 2016 Tundra crewmax with a 6” lift and 37’s. Believe me, learning to drive in a bigger truck helped me significantly with driving. Getting into my Tacoma felt like a tic tac and made driving it unbelievably easy.

This is true. First time I took my driving test the evaluator kept saying “speed up and pass this car, speed up and pass this car, speed up and pass this car” so I did as I was told and the instant the Speedo went 1 MPH over the speed limit he said “you’re speeding, that’s an automatic fail, turn around and head back to the DMV”. I was so pissed.

Went back a week later and got the creepy old guy that was notorious for hitting on everyone’s mom. Passed no problem that time.

Learning to drive in a bigger vehicle (uncles lifted 6.4 power stroke) made me way more confident when the time came to take my drivers test in a corolla. Thing felt like a go kart in comparison
