    We've got Beer Week here next week. all sorts of local places are hosting tap takeovers by various local microbreweries.

    holy crap, they say we have 14 here in Santa Cruz now... I've probably been to 6 or 7... lets see.
    • Seabright Brewery, open since the early 80s, our 2nd brewpub, and the oldest survivor. Love some of their beers, but not a fan of the new stuff their new brewer is making. bring back Sacralicious strong red ale!!! (recipe left with the last brewer, sigh)
    • Discretion - excellent Rye IPA, Black Lager, and Shimmer Pilsner, also other good specials. fairly good regional distribution of bombers.
    • New Bohemian aka Nubo - trying to do the German thing, had some decent pilz, marzen from them. darks were spotty.
    • East Cliff Brewing - newer place with very good fresh english cask ales. they make some great strong red ales. half their beers are conventional kegs, served chilled, but the other half are hand pump cask ales.
    • Steel Bonnet - new small brewer in Scotts Valley, scottish and english styles. quite good, I like an IPA that doesn't hit you over the head.
    • Santa Cruz Ale Works - tiny pub that closes at 6, mostly sells bottled (bombers) via local markets. very good basic IPA, oatmeal stout, kolsch. seasonal "Cruz Control" red IPA is great.
    • Corralitos Brewery - good stuff! really(!) good fresh-hopped Hop Kiss IPA.
    • Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery - popular but IMHO overrated
    • West End/East End - ok, not exactly a brewpub, but owned by Tied House of Mountain View, who brews their house beers. Excellent dark lager. ok amber. great food.
    • Humble Sea Brewing - new kids, very good stuff, but a few too many flavored brews for my traditional barley+hops tastes.
    • Shanty Shack - more new kids, had a great strong black beer there, but 3/4ths was sours and other oddities I dislike.

    wow, thats 10 honest brewpubs, and 1 pub-associated-pair-of-places. so I guess I've only missed 3-4 of these '14' locals.
