My son is 16 and recently his mid-shaft/center support bearing started making a noise. His truck is a 2002 crew cab 4x4 with 147k miles on it so I decided to change all of his universal joints while I was at it. Although I didn't know at the time the universal joints in the double cardan joint weren't standard size. I didn't find this out until not being able to get both lock rings in without pushing the other side out. Made some adjustments and all universal joints are in.
With truck up and no load on drive line, shaft runs smooth with no noise in both forward or reverse. With truck on the ground, in reverse, all is good with no noise. In forward gear, there is a slight ticking noise. You can let off the gas and noise goes away. I feel that the noise is coming from the double cardan joint, but not 100%. Any suggestions on what I may look for?

Welcome to TW. Are you sure it isn't the engine ticking? Mine makes a ticking noise under acceleration, almost sounds like an exhaust leak, but I've read it isnt an uncommon noise to hear with our trucks (valves I believe?)

Thank you, I'm positive, it wasn't there before pulling driveshaft and changing universal joints and mid support bearing. I marked everything before removing and installed exactly in same position as removed. I've heard the double joint can't be rebuilt? I'm thinking, although I replaced both joints, that maybe something isn't right? There is no vibration, just this clicking noise. Reminds me of when I used to put cards on a bicycle rim. At first, I thought maybe a grease fitting was hitting...all of those are good
