    All 1st gen Tacoma 4x4s have have a 7.5" ring gear in the front diff. Your '04 is a 1st gen.

    '05s and newer have an 8" ring gear in the front diff.

    All 4x4 Tacomas, 1st gen and 2nd gen are 6 lug, regardless of wheel size, 15, 16, 17.

    Thank you Digiratus-

    I was going to crawl under there & take a photo so someone would confirm what I had.
    So, 7.5in 4.10 up front and 8in 4.10 at the rear.

    Back to the drawing board. Goal is to keep my 31in tires and install F & R ratios of 3.73.

    Yes only a 7.5'' diff. Not a 8'' front.

    while you are looking for parts you should not confuse its with the 7.5'' clamshell that pre tacoma used. 85-95. They are not the same diff and do not take the same gears. Reason being is our diff sits on the driver side, and pre tacomas sit on the passenger side so we have reverse cut gears.

    I honestly think you will have trouble finding an aftermarket gear set for your diffs that isn't 4.56, 4.88 and 5.29. Your most likely source will be a toyota dealer, trying to use one of the higher stock gear ratios available. Unfortunately, that will likely require paying a premium price. Good luck with your search.

    So if I understand this, B03A (8", 4.10, 2 pinion, open) on my door tag refers only to the Rear Diff.

    Do I assume the front is also the same, but with a 7.5" ring gear? Or are the front numbers also on the door tag?

    Will a later 8" front diff interchange? Does the 2nd Gen Front diff sit on the driver's side? Or am I stuck with a 1st Gen front diff regardless?

    Cannot afford new, so I will do the research & find a used set eventually.

    There has been some discussion on swapping in a 2nd gen front diff. From what I gather, the swap would not be a very practical option for most of us. It is different enough to require many other changes to the front suspension to be able to accommodate it.

    yea i have actually looked into and thought about it. Be a LOT of work and end up being kinda custom. Would need Long travel for it to work anyways.

    Check out the basics first (Cleaning MAF, changing oils to synthetic specifically the differentials) and check out a thread somewhere on here about better gas mileage before you go spend a bunch of money on new gears.

    Welcome!

    I have been asking lots of questions at the local Toyota dealer. It seems I want differentials with the following codes:

    Front = A02A which is 7.5in 3.73 2 pinion open, and

    Rear = B02A which is 8.0in 3.73 2 pinion open.

    I did not ask the cost new for these, I cannot afford new. Looking buy or trade or a combination of both. I understand shipping will be costly but willing to do this for peace of mind while on the highway.

    Thanks all.

    :)

    Got a pretty good deal on 3.91 Front carrier and rear Pumpkin. Being shipped now.
    They are fairly Hi Miles (200k) so will carefully inspect them and if necessary fit the new bearing & seal kit I just bought "just in case".

    I am planning a 500 mi drive round trip this weekend, and will keep careful track of my mileage. Then I will make this swap and compare the results. Its a small change, but enough small changes should add up to a big improvement. Thinking of going to synthetic fluids as well.

    Happy Easter everyone who is Christian. Drive safely.
