    Hello everyone!

I am new to Tacomaworld and just bought my first Tacoma - a 2018 TRD Sport Double Cab 4x4.

I've made a couple minor mods/additions - I ordered and installed a roll-up tonneau cover and replaced all the headlights with LED's.

My next order of business is to get a power tailgate lock that works with my fob. I prefer to do things myself, but I am in no way considered a DIYer in terms of being able to identify and buy individual parts to make up a whole.

I've been doing a little research online and watched some YouTube videos on installing power tailgate locks. I'd really like to hear from the community on what they think would be easier for me to install and your overall thoughts/opinions. Thank you so much!

I installed a pop lock on mine. It was super easy.

I installed the OEM on mine. Real easy to install and it's plug and play. Hardest part is getting the passenger side kick panel back on.

I put a pop & lock in my 2018 and it was an easy install. I now put the OEM lock in my 2020 which was also easy but also no spiced wires (plug and play) and lock and unlock is quieter. Can't go wrong with either really but I vote OEM.

Will the OEM unit work on a 2016 model?

OK so I wasn't the only one that had an issue with the kick panel. I messed with that kick panel for longer than I'd like to admit and my wife walked into the garage looked at it and had it back on in under 5 minutes....smh

I went with OEM also on the wife's Tacoma.

I stumbled on to this vid that covers the OEM install pretty good, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ejq_Y6OjakE

This is all great! Thank you everyone for your posts! I was leaning towards OEM as well - I think that's what I'll go with.

Next question - any of you have a highly recommended source for me to get one or should I just go to a local dealer?

Don't go inside the dealer, they will over charge you. Check their online parts department and you will get it for much cheaper. That was my experience at every dealer in my area. Also choose in-store pick up (free) no shipping cost to you.

100% should go with OEM. I believe it has the harness built in, so all you have to do to connect the wiring is unplug the connector on passenger side and plug it in the middle.

Pop 'n' Lock, unless they've updated it recently, requires splicing in wires. I'm strongly against cutting and/or splicing into factory wiring!

I'm looking online at the website you stated and when I enter in the year and model of my Tacoma, it states that it can't confirm if it'll fit. You have a part number for what you used?
