It seems that the tailgate damper on my 2017 TRD Off Road has failed. I replaced the bushing, hoping that it would be a cheap and easy fix, but it made no difference to the speed at which the tailgate drops.

Seeing as I can turn the hinge pin pretty easily, I am assuming that the damper itself has failed.

Has anyone ever replaced this damper, and if so how do you do it? I can't seem to find anything on TW or Youtube on replacement and I know I will wind up paying the dealer a small fortune to replace a $100 part.

So far just one response via PM. I guess is just that common of a problem.

Mine broke a while back too, so now I just let the tailgate down by hand. Fixing it seemed like a waste of time to me since my hands work just fine

You are going to have to remove the right side of the bumper to access the mounting bolts for the hinge. I have replaced about 10 of these.
