I don't know what these are called but new truck. One side the tailgate rope or cord is super tight when down the other side tons of slack is this normal? Seems like the right side is holding all the weight when lowering

If alignment of the TG is correct, the cable might have pulled out of the clamp if you had something extremely heavy hanging off the TG. If not, take it back to the dealer

The slack one is not holding any of the weight at all and moves freely

Nope brand new truck with 20 miles nothing in the bed yet. I am surprised by how many small things are not right with my truck I thought I got a lemon with my 2022 but I'm starting to see this is just Toyota "quality" now. Not that Ford or Chevy is better but I expected more. Guess I'm an idiot.

I hate to say it but it's all about quantity and not quality while jacking the price to shit. Toyota lost its touch and is playing the domestic game for profit.

Quantity may play a part here. Hoods & tailgates on these trucks are notoriously heavy. With two factories rushing production full speed to keep up with demand, unsurprisingly, alignment issues in those two areas aren’t that uncommon. Good news is a minor adjustment, and good to go. No excuse, and not a good first impression, but the overall truck is a quality product that holds up very well.

I couldn’t help but notice how light the Gen4 hoods & tailgates are now (aluminum), so we’ll probably see better alignment more gap consistency in the future.

Is this something i could adjust myself easily or just let the dealer fix?

The cable length isn’t something that looks like it would be easily adjusted. If it were me I’d go to the dealer first. If they told me to piss up a rope I’d track down a set of new tailgate support cables and hope that between the four of them there was a pair that were the same length.

the tailgate is going to flex and tighten the other side up with even the slightest load.
    No problem here.

Try switching them around to see if its the tailgate or the cable that's off

Agree with this. My old Taco did the same thing. Once I stepped or put something on it they evened up and couldn't tell the difference

doesnt it need both to be about the same length to lower slowly though or is that a different mechanism?

    Man!

The things owners discover on these trucks.

I'm gonna go check mine right now but I believe they are even.

It’s a different mechanism, there’s a dampener on the passenger side hinge I believe

Totally different mechanism. Watch as it opens. The straps will be completely free to move and will only tighten up once the tailgate is fully opened. If they helped with the soft open they'd have tension on them during the whole opening process. My F150 and dad's F350 are the the same way: one has slack until it has some weight on the tailgate
