Does anyone know if a 2016 tailgate has been put on a 2nd gen tacoma or if it is possible. If not, is there a company that makes a tailgate that looks like the 3rd gen tailgate but specifically for 2nd gen tacomas. I mainly like the indented letters in the new tacoma’s tailgate, but want it on my 2nd gen.

I have done extensive measuring between a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen. It won't fit without MASSIVE amounts of custom body work.

What's the site for that tailgate? The one that looks like 3rd gen?

Nope, I tried when the 3rd gens first came out cause I liked the built in lock, lettering, and it seemed stronger.

    The fit is no bueno

I've never noticed the built in lock. Has anyone tried to just swap the handle/lock mechanism with a 2nd gen? Rather than the entire tailgate....

Figures.... I posted that without having compared pics of both gens. Simply looked at the original post and thought "sweet, a factory lock!" :(

Doing a full bed swap would probably be easier than a tailgate swap.

Different body lines, would look like a farm truck.

Adding the indentation isn't exactly difficult. Buy a tailgate skin (or tailgate), have a body shop weld the panel into the existing tailgate and then repaint.

Not cost effective at all, but it's just sheet metal. Not everything bolts on in life, that doesn't mean it's impossible or difficult to do.

The bed swap seems like the only way. Find a junker you can get the bed cheap from, and swap out. Of course it'll hit the resale value if you ever want to sell

Doesn't look bad to me :notsure:

I'd keep the 2nd gen tailgate handle though.

Even trying to swap tail gate skin no go . 3rd gen tail gate pretty much curves length wise compared to 2nd gen straight. Had a guy in Puerto Rico I think made tailgate out of fiberglass.

    Come on guys.

You all think sheet metal can't be curved, shaped, manipulated into any other shape than flat?

No wonder we have no industry. We can't even figure out how to modify a tailgate. Jesus.

Try building something one day, fellas.

You seen the tail gate .I aint no sheet metal guy but the part below the handle not even worth trying . I got a slightly damaged tail gate seen the curves . Not impossible but very difficult.
