Tailgate Cap

All the tabs are broken off the stock tailgate cap and it's time for a new one. Most of the search results are older, not sure I need a custom job.
OEM, Amazon, eBay; any satisfied replacement tailgate cap customers?

 

If you're looking for something that's made of better quality material than the stock piece Christian06 has made a really nice one for someone else. Unless he's got a grudge against you I'm sure he'll make one for you too.

The correct answer if Relentless Fabrication. It combines both into one piece for strength. Aluminum version lighter than steel.

If you still have a cap/topper on your truck pay attention to the fit for any aftermarket replacement. I got a Mobtown and it sits lower and flat. It also doesn't curve over the gate. I drive out in the dusty desert a lot and there is a gap that sucks in a lot of dust.

 

I wonder if leer and snugtop caps (the nice one) would curve over. Or if you can put 1” foam insulation strip or something

I have KB voodoo side caps which sit lower
But it has worked with modification using a Softopper

 

I can vouch for this. I love my Relentless aluminum tailgate panel. Stiffened things up considerably and now there's a flat surface to put my beer.

 

Another vote for KB Voodoo. been running one on my truck for a few years now.

I have a leer 100R on my truck and the tailgate cap keeps the rubber seal on the camper shell rear window from rubbing the paint off the tailgate.

I have an ARE shell, that's a factor, especially with custom parts. Tacomas seem to be a challenge for perfect camper shell fitment.

I bought this stock replacement for about fiddy bucks and have never looked back. Equal or better quality than OEM

Just drill 3-4 small holes and use stainless sheet metal screws and basically free. Works fine.
As others said with any shell and stock or other tailgate cap, dust will always get sucked into the shell around all 4 tailgate seams/edges and the window edges.

 

Here's my temp solution. Been on my SnugTop for over a year

Had that foam from another project. Laid down some Gorilla Tape, put the foam on that and there is a piece of Gorilla Tape on the backside that you can't see. Was a temp solution and I just left it there.

If the cap stuck out another 1/2" or the rubber seal on the cap rear window was an inch longer it would probably be fine.

 

Is the Relentless Fab's panel the top cap AND a metal flat surface for the back of the tailgate all in one? Or is it just the top cap portion?

 

It's the whole thing. It's great, but dear lord their shipping is out$$$rageous.

They wanted like $180 to ship to me on the east coast. Ended up emailing their sales lady who was very nice... and in the end, paid them like $25 for packaging, and I wanna say my actual cost on Pirateship was like $50.

Only other downside is IMO it looks extra goofy if you don't also get KBVoodoo rails for the sides.

 

Since this popped up again I should give an update.

I replaced the Mobtown with a used VooDoo tailgate cap. The last guy glued a piece of Delrin, about 1/4 to 3/16" thick, on top of the cap. I haven't tested it in a dusty area yet but I can tell it seals much better with my SnugTop. I'm going to be replacing the SnugTop with a Lone Peak wedge camper soon and I think the VooDoo will work better than the Mobtown for my needs.

Another thing I will mention is the tailgate is very "leaky" where dust is concerned. I used 2 or 3 different types of rubber seals between the gate and truck bed to help with dust incursion and it's a lot better but it's not like a door seal.

 

I used sheet metal screws too. Works fine

Do you have a picture of the "extra goofy look" you refer to?? I'm curious. I like the idea of the integrated cap to back side (and flat) panel...

 

is this product just the cap or an integrated flat back panel as well?

I don't, but... ya know how the tailgate top sits like 1/4" lower than the sides already? Make it sit like another 1/4"+ lower, cuz now it's just 1/8" aluminum sitting pretty much right on the sheet metal.

On the bright side, the closest to a complaint I have about the KB side rails is that my factory plastic ones had rubbed a few spots through the paint (possibly helped along a lot by the cap that was on it when I bought it) and that's not the new rails' fault....
