I’m having trouble replacing my tailgate cables.. has anyone else been through this? Apparently no one manufactures them! Will second gen fit on a third gen truck?

That’s awesome. My whole tailgate was stolen and apparently the part is on back order, so I started looking around to find it myself.

Removing the tailgate is done for loading heavy loads, especially with pallets. The tailgate cables holding the tailgates are not design for holding heavy loads, better to remove them , then damage the tailgate if cables break.

Some people believe dropping or removing tailgates save gas mileage, studies shown this to be not true. Better to leave the tailgate up. Aerodynamics-wind goes into the bed push the air above the roof to flow over the bed.
SEMA wind tunnel has shown having a Tonneau does improve gas mileage.

Bottom line mainly for loading heavy loads, and keep the tailgate from damages. Yes it does make it easier to steal. Most of us will never remove our tailgate. But if needed? We got this option.

There are aftermarket tailgate locking devices. Sometimes easier to steal the whole truck. Lol

A good practice is to replace both cables at the same time. Cables stretch slightly over time and if 1 needs it or could use it, replace both is a safety measure I take.

When you replace the cables - use a washer to capture them at the upper bolt. Slows down someone releasing them as it will take a wrench (or cutting the cables) to free the tether.
At the slotted hinge side, disassemble the hinge from the tailgate. Measure the hinge diameter then get a short piece of exhaust tubing that is a tight fit over the slot. Deburr this tube/ring and paint it inside and out to defeat rust. Reassemble the hinge to the gate, and the gate on the truck - with the ring slipped on and blocking the slot. To finish, fill the screw holes with JB Weld to block easy removal.

Don't risk your tailgate on a hose clamp - my grandson can defeat that in seconds - and don't spend a lot of money on the keeper ring.

The solid ring looks very secure. Great idea.
