I have a 21 tacoma bought it new, the plastic tailgate bushing has broken twice already. Truck only has 13,000 not abused or worked hard. Anyone else have an issue? i installed a flat tailgate panel that is heavier than the factory piece but i cant see that effecting it. Does the damper where is sits look bent wonder if it is tweaked? Just odd that its broken twice within a year

Isn't there a 1 year warranty on Toyota parts?

Try putting grease on the outside of it this time and see if that helps.

The part costs $4.06 so I think it's more than pain of constantly replacing rather than the cost of the part.

It is but to waste my weekend to schedule a trip to the dealer not happening for 4-5 bucks. I won’t bring my truck to the dealer for anything they can keep their free service. A little lithium can’t hurt or fluid film I will see if that makes it last a little longer

This happen to my son’ 2016, they do not carry those parts. I order thru a 3-d company, order a spare too. Was not cheap either.

Looks like there maybe something else causing this problem? Best to keep a couple of spares, years from now? It maybe harder to find as time goes by.

I would put a S/S clamp on, two reasons , harder to remove the tailgate, and keep it from sliding around.

The early 2016's had a different one originally, I got lucky and the dealer replaced the entire assembly to accept the newer design, and that was covered under warranty....took them over 2hrs. to replace....

Thank you for letting us know , the old design was replaced. That is why you cannot find the replacement parts for the old design. 2016 Tacoma.

I went to the dealer to try and explain that it had be redesigned...the parts guy told me, nope here's the part...went out in the parking lot and of course it didn't fit......took 10 mins. to try and get the tailgate/part out....so I went back and started to ream the parts guy out for not listening....the service manager was walking by and explained that the part was only on the first 2016's....he must of know, as 2 min later my truck was taken in and they started working on replacing the assembly...got lucky....and if you can get the stl file for the 3d printing I can print them out for you....cost of printing is in cents.....

My son’s 2016, tailgate bushing. I found a guy , from a web site years ago had the same problem. Started to make those 3D bushings and I did purchase two. Very well made. The first bushing still working, never needed a spare.
I do not have that contact any more.

Same thing just happened to me, but I also lost the "soft open" tailgate at the same time. Did you lose that too? Since I noticed both at the same time I figured they were related.

For the first 2016 Tacomas that got the old style hinges, the part numbers for the early 2016 are NOT available anymore.
For the later 2016s there are parts still available. Just be aware.

Does Toyota still changes the hinge today for the 2016 Tacoma or carry the newer version? Or can we still buy the newer hinge parts?

You have to drop the bumper to get at the damper bracket it looks like the damper bracket goes for about 70-90 bucks....66101-04021, the new bushing works with this....after that if it breaks, its only 5 bucks to replace..
