    http://www.redlinetuning.com/product-p/sg329900ez.htm
the review on it says it kinda sucks but he could just be some idiot who installed it wrong or something. Anyone have this one and experience the same problems in his review or know of any different ones that are better?

This product is designed to work with 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 and 2011 model years - nothing beyond 2011 will work with this design from Stabilus.

Has to do with thickness of cable and some other stuff, others have tried and gave up it binds and jams

There is no room for the cable to move with the new strut in the way. The cable gets pinched. Mine does that exact thing described in the review. I just have to move it manually. Not a big deal to me but others don't know and end up smashing the cable in tailgate gap.

I have one on my 2012. All I had to do was take a little piece of shock cord tied to the cable to pull it to the side while closing. No longer have to worry about it getting pinched.

looks like a seriously nice solution!
Do you find that one strut is adequate? I see that Stabilus includes two with the model they sell for the Hilux.

Just curious as to why you need an assist for a feather lite tailgate?

This is my 1st pickup; my previous work vehicle was a full-size dodge van, so I have no concept of what is "feather lite" or not. Quite frankly, I find the drop-down action of any tailgate to be a PITA compared to the side swing of rear doors.

As a new owner, I'm not sure whether or not repeated, unfettered dropping of the 'gate will or will not cause damage over the long term. A strut would seem to be cheap insurance, w/ inconsequential downside. Should be standard equipment on an SR5.

In the relatively short amount of time I've been using the vehicle, I've had several instances where, trying to let the 'gate down gently (please reference above comment) w/ one hand while the other is occupied w/ a substantial load, my old, arthritic joints have complained loudly. Perhaps w/ more experience, as I learn a better approach angle/ grip/ whatever, I could eliminate this effect, but Hey, it's a cheap/easy install- why not??

I'm a certified Lazy-a**. Hell, I'd use a Hoya lift to get in the cab if one was available!

Hope that satisfies your curiosity! ymmv

Been thinking of doing that myself. The stock one is as weak as a political promise.

So I've been reading. A similar upgrade is on my list, as I'm often throwing a couple of 80# metal toolboxes up there, and there's already wear in that area from the previous owner.

Mobtown has a similar offering, a few less bucks

Anyone heard of using diamond plate for this application?

Around 2009 they realized how bendable they were and beefed them up a touch to not so featherlite.
My 2007 was lighter than my 2010 and my 2015 feels heavier than the 2010.
