We use an old Coleman 425F from the 80s, works great in the cold compared to propane and in a pinch it will run on just about anything that will burn. We use the tailgate but I don't think I have any pics of our setup though. We keep all of our cooking stuff in one of these things and the stove straps perfectly to the top with a couple of bungees, survived many many outings and rough trails. And I like to think it's sort of somewhat bear resistant.

I got this 20$ ozark trail dual stove works great. If I were to do it again I would like a small lil scottle. In this heat I would just bring seafood to avoid a flame.

My tailgate gets tons of use when I'm camping. I've been using a two burner Coleman stove. Works great. I just picked up a single burner butane stove. Works even better. This is a pic of the Coleman. The butane is a Eureka.

Cool mat you got there. Without the mat would the heat from the stove melt the plastic on the tail gate?

I've never had a problem with the tailgate melting...honestly it probably gets hotter just sitting in the sun than the bottom of the stove. It is slippery though, we usually just put a towel down, makes cleanup easy and keeps the stove from sliding around.

I went with a partner stove. definitely a little spendy. but my parents have been using theirs for at least 20 years so I figured it was a worthwhile investment.

heat rises, the entirety of the stove itself doesn't really get hot.

It's just a carpet remnant. No heat issues. Bottom of stove doesn't get hot.

I use a Weber Smokey Joe when we camp. Never used it on the tailgate before and I probably wouldn't try. Gas stoves like others have used would probably be fine though.

Worth the money - keep it clean and take care of it (like your parents obviously do) and you will not regret it!!

The list is long but distinguished
Camp Chef Ranger II. I've had it for 10 yrs and it still works great. Both burners are 17k BTU and the top/legs is cast iron.
