?

Will I end up with a functional 5.7L Tacoma?

  1. Yes. I watched you're video and I have faith in you.

  3. Maybe. If you're a Toyota tech and have an engineering degree.

I have the ability to do this AND I just bought a donor truck - a 2007 4x4 5.7L Tundra. I'll be documenting the swap on my YouTube channel.
This Tacoma was rolled when I bought it. I straightened it up just enough to get glass back in it and get it R-titled. (I'm a function over fashion guy 100%) I removed the DB lift the previous owner had and fabricated my own 3.5" long travel arms with King shocks. I have Method beadlock wheels with 37" tires, RCV front axles, 4.56 gears, and some custom fabbed parts like the high clearance front diff carrier/skid plate and front bumper. I also moved the front cab mounts back a few inches for lots of tire clearance.
I'm building a GM 14 bolt full floating 6 lug disc brake rear axle for it now - also installing 48" trailing arms and King shocks. I have to get that done first cause the ring/pinion is busted right now. THEN I can start on the 5.7L swap!
Subscribe to my channel https://www.youtube.com/whiplashdvd and check out my old school videos too! I live in Carlisle PA - Home of some of the largest car shows in the world. And I've been making videos since the early 2000's. Just started the YouTube channel though.
This is the playlist for the entire truck build:

Some pics of the Tacoma when I first got it. It was rolled and the rear ring and pinion were trashed.

Replaced engine with an '07 FJ Cruiser motor. Clutch accumulator deleted. WIP. plan to add new exhaust, cold air intake, URD short throw shifter,
Just finished pulling the motor from my 05 taco! But just going w a the same engine to replace it. Thought about doing a v8 swap but too expensive for me, and too involved.
But im sure it can be done and it will be bad ass! Good luck.

Nice! I'm intrigued by the "budget friendly" long travel as well. I've seen these for 1st gens but never in 2nd or 3rd gens

Do you plan on making it emissions legal?
I'm just curious because that sounds like a nightmare trying to integrate all the electronics and emissions etc???

I've often thought about how this kind of swap would work out !!

@MikieSwartz you obviously have the skill and knowledge to put this thing together so get started and post lots of pics  I have a buddy that’s throwing a 4.7 out of an 05 tundra into an 85 extra cab and I’m wondering if your swap might be a little easier with the computer side of things being that it’s going into a similar year truck. Here is a pic of his.

Those 4.0L V6 engines aren't cheap either. I had one rebuilt about 4 years ago because the cheapest one at a junkyard was $2200 at the time. Thanks for the encouragement.

It looks like the 05 Tacoma has a similar drive-by-wire pedal as the Tundra. I figure that will be an advantage. The wiring is the most dreadful part. I have a friend here with an 85ish truck he put a 4.3L V8 from a Lexus in. It is pretty sweet.

I'm planning to keep the factory Tundra ECU and I'd like to keep it emissions friendly (at first anyway). Definitely sounds like a nightmare, but I'm pretty confident. And after the swap is done, I have a friend that is a very experienced tuner. He can probably tweek the ecu to keep the check engine light off. But where I'm at, we can have emissions exemption if we use the vehicle less than 5,000 miles per year. So I'm not too worried either way.

I certainly am pushing my YouTube channel. I just started it a few months ago. My videos will be way more complete and informative, but I will keep updates on here as well.
