You’re probably right, so used to the suicide doors in my 3G, can see getting frustrated with the XC. SR5 DC makes the most practical sense.

They sure are, with the Tundras there was only a handful of engine failures at first, next thing we know they are recalling 100K+ of them. Have a feeling the same thing is going happen with the 4G’s trans. Toyota does stand behind their products, but won’t happen overnight.

Could always wait until they iron things out a year or two. Could also simply buy my niece a RAV4, be better than the shit box she has now. She started her own business, so money is tight, she could really use a reliable vehicle. Want to help her out a bit. She would love my Tacoma, but honestly she would be excited over anything.

I can’t imagine not having the suicide doors on my Access Cab, and can’t really see what Toyota was thinking by getting rid of them except to push people to the double cab models. The function severely loses out.

In my honest opinion, unless she needs to have a truck for her business and is towing/hauling large bed loads often, a RAV4 is possibly the best overall vehicle you could put her in, especially the hybrid. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t last her for at least 10 years with basic maintenance. My sister has one, my mom is looking to buy one at the end of the year, and with as nice as they drive, I’ve even considered getting one.

We have about 90 F150's as company vehicles, not tooo many issues really so far. We mile them out at 90k though so

Was thinking about that today running around doing errands, use those doors often without even realizing it. Today I was conscious of it. Plus side on the double cab, smidge easier to open in parking lots and a bit more space. Need a 6’ bed, down side the DCLB is a bit on the long side. Not going to do any hardcore wheeling, probably a non-issue.

She started a dog grooming service, believe most of her clients come to her, thought it would be easier to toss carriers in a truck than a CUV if need be, most likely it wouldn’t matter, believe she does mostly those rat dog things. I have always had medium to large dogs, so that is where my mind goes. Another family member has a Rav, has been great, or at least I never hear them complain about it.

I can't recall ever driving a Sprinter I do like them, don't really need a van.

I see the VW Micro Bus is going on sale, $60-70k pricetag, yeah I really don't need a van in that price range. That's right around the same price as the MBZ Sprinter I would want 2500 AWD. The VW seems kind of cool, not that I want a BEV, and the mark ups there's going to be mark ups, there a 1st Edition model. The Bus could be a flop for VW in the U.S. the market for mini vans isn't huge and there are so many lower cost alternatives.

Have a couple friends that have them, they drive nice, however a little on the large side. Like the size of Metris better, unfortunately no 4WD, heard they discontinued for the US anyways.

My next door neighbor kinda went through the same thing too, she bought a Class C for retirement and found it to be more trouble than what it is worth, sold it and found a VW Eurovan camper. I warned her those can be fussy mechanically, she didn’t listen. She is happier driving it around though, much easier. Which retirement should be, every day is like Sunday.

Those new buses look cool, would be terrible for traveling though. Watched the TFL video with Ford Lightning trip to Alaska, what a pain in the ass. Of course the Tacoma with a 18 gallon tank wouldn’t be much better. Reading the real world mpg threads, people are getting sub 300 mile range some are sub 250, with it loaded down guessing mpgs will be around 15-16. Back to thinking the F150 with the 36 gallon tank is the way to go, will have to get used to the funky layout of the controls. Can’t really beat the price either, discovered the STX trim, finding those around $45K. No floor shifter, but it does come with a console and a few other goodies the XLs don’t. The Tundras you have to spend over $50K to get the 32 gal tank. Isn’t even offered in the SRs. Toyota specs their trucks weird.

Had a chance to sit down and watch the video on it, didn’t know they had honeycomb insulation panels, assumed it was only plain sheet aluminum like the Super Pacific and the GFC, see what your saying about the bed layout better design than the SP or GFC. Appears side windows aren’t an option on those two brands either, not seeing anything on their option list. Currently have a Leer with windoors on my 3rd Gen, look out the passenger side often since I am in and out of parking lots most of the day, use the door function several times a week.

I considered the F150 STX when I was truck shopping 2 years ago. I had a friend with one and was impressed with the fuel mileage both empty and while towing as well as how well it pulled a decent sized enclosed trailer. However, his was the 3.3L and it seemed in order to get that you need to pony up quite a bit more money. Plus I considered it a safe bet that I could get 200,000 relatively trouble free miles out of a 3rd Gen Tacoma but with a Ford don't have that much confidence. That said, I wouldn't have that much confidence in a completely redesigned model from Toyota either and it's looking like my lack of confidence isn't totally unfounded.

The one I test drove was the 2.7 twin turbo, had more than enough power for me, made my Taco feel even more like a slug, was like “holy crap!” Barely touch the accelerator and it goes! Where with the Taco when you mash down the pedal it has to think about whether or not it wants to move.

Another option is, buy the F150, if it gets too fussy trade it in on something else. Maybe by that time the teething issues will be handled with the 4th Gen, perhaps they’ll come to their senses and offer a larger fuel tank by then too.

Ford Performance just came out with a tune for the RR that takes it to 455 HP/536 lb-ft of torque for $825 plus install. More is better right?

No doubt the 2.7 will out pull the 3rd Gen I ended up with, I was just of the mindset that if I was going to an F150 I wanted the 3.3 (which I also heard is less problematic). The stock ECU software on the Tacoma is terrible and the reason for that delay you feel. A pedal commander or better yet a good tune really sorts that out. I added a spacer between the upper and lower intake manifolds on mine and that picked up the torque down low too.

Good lord! That is all I need! Lol! My going fast days are over, trying to relax, sit back and enjoy the scenery now.
Yeah the 3.3 is probably all you need for plunking around. In theory it should last longer. Wonder why they discontinued it?

Thought about getting a tune, my Taco is still under warranty, if I decide to keep it was going to wait until it is out of warranty. Though there have been a couple times I needed to avoid an accident, go to smash the throttle and it hesitates, bit unnerving to say the least.

If you're concerned about the warranty I'd just get a pedal commander, you can easily unplug it if needed.

I misspoke, it was the 3.5L Ecoboost, not the 3.3L and it seems you can't get the 3.5 in the STX.

I've driven the F-150 2.7 across Wyoming as a work truck. It's a real pleasant motor to drive. I was impressed by the power and MPG it got. The 2.7 is actually a pretty reliable unit. Toyota has gotten so drunk on their pricing lately that yeah, I'd go with the F-150.

    Good to know. Thank you.

Gotcha, do see the 5.0 V8 is available, no turbos to worry about.

Only got to spend about 30 minutes in it, even in that little time sure did like the engine better than my Tacoma.

Yeah the pricing, not sure I can justify it any more, especially you can get so much more with the F150. XLs for the same price as a SR5. Same fuel economy, twice the range, large touch screen standard, better payload and towing. Size-wise isn’t night and day anymore, a SuperCab vs the DCLB are within inches.

The Nissan Frontier has never had the transmission issues their FWD CVT cars had. The Frontier is a pretty solid platform, less than a Tacoma for sure, but still not the size of an F150.
