Okay, so I recently watched a video from JerryRigEverything where he talked about the off-road capabilities of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. One thing that stood out to me was that fact that the car was water proofed. Like, the doors and all the seals were water proof. That got me thinking about my truck. I have taken it in some, somewhat, deep water and did not notice any water seeping in. It also may not have been that deep. What are your experiences with this? Is there something that can be done to make them "water proof?" How well do these trucks hold up to deep water? Want to make sure I don't screw up my truck going in a deep pool.

    Thanks

If you care about your carpet I wouldn’t go up to the door jam, if you dont care about the inside then just dont go as far as the intake inlet and you will be fine, well actually if you dont have an electric fan then I wouldn’t go deep enough to let the fan hit the water

If you want to explore rivers and Lakes buy a boat

What good does making the cab water resistant when the under hood electrical items as well as the engine intake are exposed

Major project to make the engine compartment water tight then figure out a new cooling system

The deeper the water the more the pressure the better the sealing needs to be

Alternator and A/C compressor are weak points. Also is the starter. Went deep once, had water come in the cab. Had to take out all the carpet and let it dry in the sun which was a Pita. A/C compressor bearing made terrible noise after, so annoying. Finally had to get it changed because I was worried it would seize. Actually I think my compressor did go... My starter went out a couple weeks after being submerged.

Btw, most important is you have to extend all your breathers and vents for the diffs, t-case, and transmission..... the first two are easy to flush but the trans.... not fun.

Waterproofing the doors or the engine bay, IMO, is a dumb idea. But I guess if you have a $100k+ 4x4 like the G-class, not getting your carpet wet is a primary concern.

For people who actually wheel, though, not floating away is a bigger concern, which is what would happen if water is not allowed to get in the cab or engine bay...

Diff breathers, snorkel, etc... are all you really need. Motors and alternators generally work fine submerged, this is actually how you break in r/c car motors (in a glass of water). What's most damaging to components is all the crap in the water (mud, silt) and corrosion.

My brother once found a deep hole with his '86 4Runner, front wheels went in, and water got up to the windshield. It ended up sitting for a couple days because he couldn't get a tow. Finally got it out, towed it home, and changed all the fluids. Took a fair amount of cleaning, but everything lasted another 100k miles before I finally killed it (I later bought it form my brother).

These guys drove a jeep COMPLETELY submerged (12 feet), and mainly all they did was waterproof the switches, and smear dielectric grease in all the plugs, and obviously the snorkels.

Fred’s jeep is pretty cool, he actually had a cummings r2.8 in that video, all he water proofed was the small amount if eletrics in the car abd used dye electric grease on all the conections to keep the water out

Dye electric grease is a good idea. I went and did every connection I could find.
