I just returned from a trip to England and saw a number of Toyota Hilux trucks and was wondering what the real difference was between the Tacoma and Hilux other than a better looking truck in the Hilux and the availability of a diesel. Can anyone discuss?

Looks are subjective, I like the Tacoma better. The differences are numerous and subtle but you have listed the main ones I've seen here. There aren't that many, as they are almost the same truck.

The hilux is indestructible as proved by top gear, haven't seen anyone beat a taco like that but I bet she could handle it

The hilux was a one ton truck, right idk if it still is and the tacoma is only half ton. so the axle suspension and cv joints are all stronger to support the weight. therefore more BEEf

I have had 2 tacos now and drive a hilux everyday over here while deployed, no comparison, the tacoma is way better, besides the diesel option, tacoma wins hands down.

Here is what I found on the Hilux:
fully boxed frame, front end same except lower control arm connections to frame are a bit lower, diesel (although many markets have the 4.0 and they love it)... rear axle same but springs are more HD, diff gears must be stronger as failure rates are almost non-existent... other than that they're pretty close... The only reason we get the Tacoma because the N. American market proved over and over that 95% use Tacomas for just daily driving, working the trucks hardly.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Hilux looks more like a car than truck imo but havig a diesel dont matter either way, I'd rather have a gas engine in this truck. Tacomas are damn tough, dont let anyone tell you otherwise!

Hilux looks more European, more car like interior and ride.

Most of the people that I know and has one, drive it in the city ( new york like city) then have a farm or weekend home away from the city and the access route are dirt, if it rains, while you are there amd don't have a pick up truck you are screwed.

Hilux actually still has a 4WD stick instead of the girly knob
