Hi, I just got the 2024 Tacoma limited. It had 5 miles on it when I got it. The dealer filled the tank and it read 265 mile range till empty. Now, this truck is supposed to have an 18.2 gallon gas tank. I thought that seemed low so I drove a total of 231 miles, it read 40 miles till empty so I filled it again. It only took 11 gallons of gas. I got 18 miles to the gallon. So shouldn't it take more than 11 gallons to fill when it is down to only 40 miles of gas left in the tank? I have also researched the reserve on it which I found to have a range of 50 miles on reserve so that tells me the reserve tank is approximately 2.5 gallons based on the 20 mpg manufacturer. By my calculations, from empty to full, 18.2 gallon tank the mileage range should be around 365 give or take a few miles. 265 is a full 100 miles off. Can this possibly be and 18.2 tank? Is there a blockage? When any of you got your tacoma's what range did your first tank show? All new tacoma's have the 18.2 tank so it shouldn't matter if its an off road. Input would be greatly appreciated!

Toyota historically is conservative with their DTE. My truck shows 30 miles to empty and I only get 17.5-18 gallons in a 21 gallon tank. My guess is Toyota is doing the same thing again. Better on the truck for people to be testing out the range by running it near empty and causing wear on fuel pump.

Your truck at 20mpg should go 340 miles(minimum). Refill should be 17 gallons with the refill light on, and needle nearly on E.

But when the tank was first filled shouldn't it have shown a 365 mile range on the full tank instead of 265? Yours would make sense because you probably have a 3 or 3.5 gallon reserve tank.

CrispyTacoLover, THANK YOU!! That's exactly what I thought. I cannot seem to get that through to the manager at my dealership. I have calculated and calulated using my current mileage, the mileage according to manufacturer, by the gallon, adding in the reserve tank, etc and no way can I come up with an 18.2 gallon tank. I'm making them put it on the lift tomorrow and measure the tank, get the serial numbers. They are gonna have to prove to me there is nothing wrong with the tank or the gauge.

That does make sense but when I put the second tank of gas in, I was at 40 miles till empty and the 11 gallons was what it took to fill up and it still read 265. It also shows I am getting 18 mpg. When I filled up, I had 231 miles on it. So you think the more I drive, the more gallons for fill up and the range will increase?

The distance to empty is purely a computer calculation based on previous driving habits, it should also be noted that on many modern vehicles due to the tank not actually being flat the float doesn't work super well on less then 1/8 tank so the computer starts to use estimates based on driving habits to guess where the needle should be. Hell I had a ford loaner car once that I clearly wasn't paying attention to and drove about 4 miles to a gas station even when it said 1 mile to empty, granted I did lots of coasting and no hard acceleration.

You’re welcome. If you are running it nearly dry, it should be 16-17 gallons to fill.

My 2021 is always 18-19 gallons at fill up. That’s usually 340 miles per tank. I get 17.5-19mpg. It’s all city driving at 30-60mph.

This is my first toyota truck so it's really different. I've had 2 f150's, a 22 and a 23 plus a 23 ranger and none of them had gas gauges that calculated like that! I guess it's a learning curve with the toyota. Thanks again

I never use the onboard computer. I always track new vehicles mpg using the Fuelly phone app.

Have you seen videos of how they deliver vehicles from the assembly plant to the dealers, jumping from train car to train car? Those delivery miles may as well be rallycross miles. The trip computer uses the high fuel consumption data from those miles to calculate distance to empty.

Was this thread an April Fool's joke, or does a "Reserve tank" actually exist as an option? Is it factory or aftermarket?

I think he meant the extra they build in for safety after you get to zero miles until empty.

Probably what @Korywithak said but I noticed OP said she has owned two recent F150s. Ford previously has offered an extended tank option available on some F150 and Super Duty configurations, I don't know if its still a option though.
Edited, OP is female, my bad, didn't notice
