You just said that the Tacoma battery electric vehicle will make the current hybrid electric powertrain seem like a scooter and cost $50,000.

It’s like a wind up truck. Wooohooo
Might as well get the non hybrid if it only helps on moving the truck forward.

Then do it and stop complaining about it on the internet about it not being “full hybrid.” I am super excited about the apparently partial hybrid Tacoma. Go buy whatever the hell you want. This thread is stupid.

Why does it matter that Kia's and Toyota's take on the use of hybrid powertrains is different?

Is your Kia plug-in? Personally, I'm a huge fan of my Highlander Hybrid. Don't change a thing about how you drive it and you get better gas mileage than the non-hybrid version. Electric heaters kick ass in the winter, too. If the Tacoma is similar, count me in.

Seeing as the initial change from not moving to cruising uses the most fuel, that seems like the perfect time to utilize some electric assistance.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
Hybrid power are combinations between different technologies to produce power. Based on the definition then the Tacoma qualifies. Tundra, sequoia and other Toyota/Lexus and now to include the tacoma use what’s considered a P2 parallel hybrid configuration (if my memory doesn’t fail.) Cheers!

So the equivalent of a RAV4 vs a Tacoma. How would those be in any way comparable?

Why not compare the Tacoma's shitty acceleration to the Supra, too?

The tundra battery box is like the size of mine I know the truck is heavier but they could have done better. Maybe in 5th gen. Even made a version for the guys that don’t off-road that would be great. Fingers crossed for 5th gen

I remember watching a Toyota video about their hybrid batteries. They plan to switch to Solid State Lithium or NiMh flat batteries. Much lighter and smaller impact in the passenger area. Dunno when that will happen though but very soon.

This is what happens when you market hybrid as eco friendly/fuel efficient for 20 years to the general public

So far…. Added fog lights swapped halogens to led’s, interior lights to led’s, bed lights added, led/strobe brake lights, trying to figure out the right leds for turn signals.
I had a ram with this system. Worked for a few seconds on takeoff and that’s it. Also worked for start stop control. Used a beefed up alternator/generator combo to do it with a 48v battery. As soon as the bearings starting squeaking in my 18k mile truck I got my Tacoma

The battery in the 2024 can power the electric motor for about three minutes at full torque. So no, you won’t be driving to the Wal-mart and back on all-electric. Similarly, when towing, or out on the highway, you are gas-only for 99.9% of your trip.

But, when accelerating from a stop, or punching it on the freeway to pass a semi, the extra power will be very, very cool.

How much the battery and regenerative braking will help reduce fuel consumption in city (stop and go) will be interesting. The Taco battery is 1.87 kW.h, versus the 1.31 in a Prius, so the amount it can recover from braking will be higher, but it also is on a much heavier vehicle.

A hybrid system was used in a Prius for gas mileage.
A hybrid system was used in a SF90 for lap times.
A hybrid system was used in a Tundra for torque.

Does it have regen braking? Or is it just just using gas to charge a battery for a temporary acceleration booster?

And what happens to the battery when the truck is parked out in the freezing cold? Teslas keep the battery warm to prevent damage, which if course drains the battery as it sits. Does the Tacoma do this? Or just let the cold foobar the battery?

Watch the whole thing, or go to 5:42. I assume the 4GT will be similar, if not exactly the same as the current gen Tundra hybrid in terms of operation.
