My Tacoma's engine is pretty loud (as was the other 6MT I test drove) and I assumed that was because it had Engine Sound Enhancement. So I hooked the Tacoma up to an OBDLink MX+ and connected to it with Carista. While I was able to disable the seat belt chimes, there was no option that I could see for ESE (or Active Noise Cancellation for that matter).

So either my Taco doesn't have it, or Carista can't see it.

Does anyone know for certain if the Gen4s have ESE/ANC, and if so is there a way to disable ESE without going to the dealer? I have a TRD Sport with the JBL system, if that matters.

Thanks for your help, and I'm new to this OBD2 stuff so my apologies if I'm making rookie mistakes.

Take a look here, I think it is discussed.

Yeah I saw that and even posted in that thread. But Carista isn't giving me the option, so either not all Tacos have it or something else is amiss. Also, the main topic of that thread is mechanical engine noise not ESE.

Where did you find the option? Was it under "Customize...Other"? Carista isn't giving me the option there or in any of the other Customize menus.

I'm sending a support request to Carista; if they have anything interesting to say I'll add it here for posterity.

Cool, thanks. I definitely do not have those options in Carista, so as I mentioned above either my truck doesn't have ESE or there is something else wrong.

did you buy the subscription? I believe certain options are only available if you get the subscription, but probably not worth it unless you are changing other options

I did buy a subscription and was able to successfully toggle all five seatbelt chimes off. Not that it's a big deal since we wear our seatbelts, but I wanted to see if Carista was able to modify settings and it was.

Weird. I could see that option on Carista.

Newwt and TACOFLVRD, are you guys using a Carista adapter? If so, are you using the plain white $40 one or the fancy-pants $80 one with a handy fabric pull-strap and sporty multi-colored LED lighting?

I have not heard what sounds like fake engine noise in my Sport MT. I do not have any upgrade packages, no moon roof or JBL, electric seats etc... I have no option in my Carista for engine noise either. I found a thread on Reddit and someone say's with confidence its not in all packages. "No. All trim levels do not. First, the sound isn’t Fake. It comes from a transducer in the intake and is fed only into the premium JBL system. If you don’t have that you’ll never hear it." I'm new to TW so not sure about the politics of linking to other sites so am not going too. But I can confirm I do not hear what I believe is piped in engine noise and I do not have JBL system nor does an option exist in my Carista. So there might be something to what the guy said.

Hopefully, someone can find credible evidence to this subject.

Carista responded and said if it's not listed in the Customize menu then my Taco doesn't have it. I have a TRD Sport with the Upgrade package (which includes JBL audio) and the 14" multimedia screen option. Who knows. :notsure:

I think the manual transmission models don't have it.

That would make sense from what is being said here…
My sr5 upgrade w/ JB’s, auto, never sounded like noise was being pumped into the cab, maybe it’s just super subtle…
Maybe I’m just deaf from 30 years of Air tools from wrenching, there’s guys that claim they hear a turbo whistle which I really don’t…

My OR sounds augmented. I am going to order the Carista adapter this week and go through all of the settings.

When I Test drove an off road to determine if it had substantially less body roll over a 2 Wheel Dr., SR5, it definitely sounded noisier than what I had before I turned it in back to toyota.
I just assumed it was noisier due to more powertrain / drivetrain crap crammed in the same area, motor mount configuration, etc
but maybe I’m mistaken, and it was actually the noisemaker…
    EDIT:
Now that I think back, I even told the salesman that the offroad was way noisier than my sr5.
I , wasnt thinking thats the "noise maker" at the time,
I was thinking offroad are just noisy due to configuration.
Think its probably the noise maker now....
Its not a good addition to this beautiful truck ....
Especially coming from an sr5, but I figured / assumed they all had the technology so thought nothing of it...

My OR has sound damping under the hood and acoustic glass. It's dead quiet. The Engine Sound Enhancement only occurs when you give it throttle, so I turned mine off.

Does your SR5 have the sound damping?
