Does anyone know if there is any possibility for a new design Turbocharged 4 cyl. in the Tacoma that could make it into the US, more specifically would it fly in California?
I've read and heard different opinions on both yes and no.
Diesel Toys is a conversion company putting the Toyota D4D, that is available in other countries, into the Tacoma. I have a feeling they won't let that into California.

The 3rd gen will never had a diesel, EV or be a hybrid 3rd gen despite what the fanbois post every other week about some clickbait site nonsense that said so. They can't even put rear disc brakes on the Tacoma.

GM has what you're looking for

No sir. Never is gonna happen.

You could do a 3rd gen diesel conversion for about 25k.

A bit off topic, but I really don’t understand what’s the big deal with drum brakes? My truck stops on a dime. Drums require less maintenance and are cheaper in the long run. I really don’t get it.

Any articles stating diesel for Tacoma is just click bait.

Once the Tundra is released the new Tacoma will be next in line, very likely to be a 4 cylinder hybrid, but never diesel. Toyota has no intentions of diesel in Canada/US.

Just put diesel in the truck as is and get the diesel tune. They work magic with these computers.

Toyota has said many times that diesel isn't gonna make it to the US. Tougher regulations make it not worth it.

Best you could do is import an old one that is 25 years or older.

Because trophy truck, race truck and no other pickup truck in production in the North American market has drums. The 2021 Corolla comes standard with 4 Wheel disc brakes these days.

    Why I like disc brakes

    Easy to view pad wear
Opens the doors to selecting other pads
Opens the doors to selecting other rotors
It's a lot easier to upsize brakes since the carrier mount is already built into the axle
    No bell crank seizing issues
    The look sexy

It amazes me we can't have diesel in the US but they have them in NZ and probably every where else in the world.

I feel like that is just a lame excuse on Toyota's part lol but what do I know. I mean Ford, GM, and RAM seem to have no issues at all with diesels in the US.

The big 3 already have a customer base that buys their diesels. It would be a new market for Toyota. At this point, it's not worth it to make the investment. The diesel market is gonna shrink with tougher regulations. Almost all European manufacturers have pulled their diesel products out of America. I think Land Rover is the last one who still offers it.

Toyota is smart. They know where to put their money and sadly, it isn't with diesel.

GM makes one, but does anyone know how well it sells? I don't see many of them and I live in diesel truck territory.

I did sell some left over 3rd gen stuff to a guy that had one and he said it was a lemon. He did say the MPG was awesome vs. the Sport that replaced it.

Fuel is cheap in the US, and a diesel tacoma would have a hefty surcharge on it. Not enough people would buy it for Toyota to engineer a diesel that would meet our requirements.

I think you’re onto something there. Why don’t you buy a used GMC Canyon 4 banger diesel and try it out in the meantime while Toyota roles it out. Should be fine. Even works in California.

Tons of diesel full size pickups here, every construction sight, logging landing I’d wager close to 50/50 gas to diesel.

Interesting. The shoes on my previous truck lasted till 115k miles, was great.

Also, my drums never seized, ever. Had my taco for 3 years.

Really doesn’t bother me that Toyota is saving money on drum brakes, it works great so leave it. I also could care less how it looks, it’s a pickup.

I wish Toyota would build a us spec diesel Tacoma.

    Would I buy one? No.

But I would laugh my ass off as this forum would implode under the weight of a 1000 stupid questions and a never ending stream of owner inflicted mishaps.
