I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner extended (4doors) 2wd 2.7L 4 Cylinder. 150K miles. SF Bay Area (East Bay)

On the transmission, it says Aisin Awc Japan. Model: 30-40LE 3500 3G300 . In the door says A340e.

I had the car parked in the driveway for many months as I was away at college.

Needed to pass smog and can not. Bought a cheap OBD scanner and check the engine light on, replaced the fuel sensor error code P1135 . So changed oil, filters, sparks, battery, & upstream fuel sensor.

New issue and I don't have any codes for it. Truck in Reverse and Drive will not engage the gear. simply does nothing but rev, had to have it towed up my parent's driveway.

I replaced the tranny seal, filter, and fluids myself OEM parts. Still the same issue. Could it be selenoids or should I replace the transmission is completely gone? Can't afford a new tranny so looking at some used ones from salvage (eBay / CL) and have a mobile mechanic or hobbyist (from CL) help install. Anything I should look out for?

Can I use any a340e or does it have to be specific for my model (several models use this)? I read you have to get as close to your cars year and miles as possible, is that correct? A340E (30-40LE) Toyota A transmission - Wikipedia

    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I attached the trans repair manual. It's possible the #1 solenoid is bad/stuck or plugged.
    30-40le is the same as a A340e

    Thank You for your help!

Is there a way to test the solenoid without tearing apart the new seal I just did with the filter and fluids? Also Would it be the solenoid if all gears do the same reaction, ... can rev up to 4000 rpm and it does nothing. I saw a video on Youtube that some gears should work if some of the other solenoids function is that right Ie. 2nd gear? I did get a quick engaging of tranny (tiny movement for a second) in a few gears when I kept switching back and forth the gears quickly while trying to rev it but it did not fully engage and would not do it consistently. I am going to see if I can find someone off CL to do a techstream test and see if it pulls any codes the cheap ODB isn't.

Any thoughts on used transmissions from salvage. Anything I should watch out for? Can't afford a rebuilt or $3,000 repair. Does it have to be the exact year and close millage or any a340e will do and year in that range? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFAaUHoqACc&list=PLDgRzoMlwTHYKgD617O5VxY2EVog69r_s&index=18&t=0s

Found this seems pretty hard to replace would have to get a hobbyist maybe off CL to help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP00caN7q0s&list=PLDgRzoMlwTHYKgD617O5VxY2EVog69r_s&index=32&t=0s

    Open to ideas

    Hi gearcruncher

It would jolt as it switched gears accelerated a bit before (between 25mph to 35 range) it sat but all gear seemed to work. It had been sitting for "many" months while I was away at school. I never drained it or anything (didn't know I had to). My parent's driveway is at a 24.5% grade (got a ticket for sitting on the curb). It did move before I parked it there but I had the code P1135 Upstream fuel sensor error and could not pass smog a few times even though we cleared it. The transmission fluid had never been changed (2002) w/150,000 miles on car. I tried first Lucas Trany fix fluid and it did not work. Then I drained and re-did filter, Toyotas fluid for tranny, gasket. Old fluid was dar, and there was particulate on the magnets. The guy at Toyota showed me I only needed 2 and a half (bought 3 quarts) of the tranny fluid. I put fluid it in the dipstick tube. I cannot properly check the fluid level as it's on grade 24.5% and if I do it will go into the street (car is not flat). I can drain it if you wish and put in again.

Edit: The front of the car is going up the hill

Use your hydraulic jack to raise the rear end, or the front end, to level out the truck. You can then check your fluid better that way too.

edit: I think my 340 took around 5 quarts but check your levels 1st before adding in more.

Very unusual to have forward and reverse fail at the same time considering the truck moved before you parked it .
In my mind you are very low on fluid .
Find a way to get the truck flat and check the fluid level again

If the guy at Toyota told you it takes 2.5 quarts he should be washing dishes at a Golden Corral instead. It takes around 6 quarts, nearly 7. Listen to GearCruncher

Thanks all for your help! Went to the Hayward, CA Toyota Parts, told the guy I needed more fluid. Ran Vin #. Told me to get my book when I questioned the quarts. Can someone confirm this as now I am confused by quarts I need? Regarding testing on street level will take a tow truck so might be a while until I can do that and avoid street traffic for a flat surface.

tony2018- Don't know how to do a jack, I don't own one, just the ones that come with cars. It would slide down the grade of the sloped hill (driveway) I think.

See Attached from manual 2002 Tacoma Prerunner 4 Door 2.7L Automatic 2WD.

I’m not sure where those numbers came from but the aren’t right. I bet the converter alone holds a quart or so. Put a quart in at a time till it moves. It’s obviously low. After it moves to level ground and up to temp use the dipstick to get it right.

I think there are 3 of them, all located directly under the pan, should be fairly easy to access.

Have you verified the shifter is actually moving the linkage into drive or any gear? You say it revs up and will not move, could it still be in park or neutral?

Soooooooooo?!?! What happened? A little bird is telling me with absolute certainty that if you only put 2.5 quarts in that thing, it is nowhere near enough. Add a quart or two. What have you to lose?

Had a guy bring his truck in for some transmission work many years ago . He lost all his fluid from a broken transmission cooling line and he was deep in the bush .
Band aid the cooling line back together but he didnt have any oil
Would you believe he filled his transmission with water to get home .
He cooked the transmission but he made it to the highway and got towed the rest of the way to my shop .
I dont know why I brought this up lol
