So i have not done alot of towing but i was checking u haul site and put in my 07 Taco V6 double cab and u haul says it doesnt recommend letting me tow a car dolly or car trailer even if i pick a Geo metro to tow behind.
Not a towing expert but is this true? because its little difficult to believe I cannot tow a car on a trailer with my Taco.

how much does the car trailer weigh? and what is the towing capacity of your truck? I know the TRD sport model is rated at 6500 lbs towing capacity.

Their website is dumb. I told them I was picking up a UTV. I was definitely over the 4Runner's capacity here, but I didn't have a lot of good options.

Keep it out of overdrive, take your time, and don't go over 60 mph.

UHaul did you a favor by providing this information.

    There's several factors:
4 cylinder doesn't have the towing capacity, neither does V6 without tow package
V6 with towing is 6500, which is trailer + trailer load + people + whatever is in the truck bed, if I'm not mistaken
UHaul may require a minimum of a half ton (aka "full size") truck for liability.

Keep in mind that towing power doesn't guarantee shipping power :p

OP has a V6 , but the different models will have different towing capacities . options like trailer hitch and engine oil cooler , tranny cooler make the difference , as well as vehicle weight. I'm sure U haul will err on the side of caution also as anyone can rent a trailer regardless of towing experience

    The trailer is 2210#

A Geo Metro weighs under 2000#

He'd be well within the truck's towing capacity.

U-Haul is in the business of renting trailers, they want to rent trailers. They have guidelines, while their guidelines don’t recommend your truck with a car trailer it appears they didn’t tell you no.

Tacoma’s are poor for towing, too little payload, too little motor, too soft of suspension. I don’t recommend towing much anything with them either. My 3/4 Ton Suburban (8.1L!!!) was a much better tow vehicle.

If you proceed others gave good advice, keep it out of 5th gear, keep the speed down.

Does keeping it in 5th gear (Overdrive) help not damage or over heat the tranny?

To my knowledge my Prerunner has no oil cooler nor does it have a transmission cooler either.

You want to keep it out of overdrive. In overdrive, it will downshift constantly. It's just easier on the transmission and the engine.

I would expect the prerunner to have similar towing capacity to the 4×4's. But, check the manual to be sure.

A CRV is basically the same thing as the Element I towed. I think they're around 4000#, give or take a few hundred. You'd definitely be maxed out. But, it's doable if you're careful.

I wouldn't want to tow it very far. And, I'd take backroads rather than the freeway if possible.

They don't want to rent you the trailer for liability reasons. If they rent you the trailer then you load a Suburban and wreck, they know you will say "but uhaul said it was ok" in the lawsuit.
With my 07 Prerunner DCSB V6, I towed my tandem car trailer with my car loaded up with all my stuff and a 2 bay tool box in the bed of the truck from AZ to OR with no issues.

Something’s wrong here. Uhaul approves me to tow a metro with my 4 cylinder regular cab. I just checked the website.

With a trailer? Or, tow dolly?
