Got my tires balanced and rotated today. They said some of the lug nuts are swollen and should be replaced at the next rotation. I’ve not heard of this lug nut swell. Is this common and where can I buy good lug nuts? Thanks.

Yes factory lug nuts suck. Get rid of them for some gorilla lug nuts. This is what a swelled/stripped lug nut looks after you take a chisel to it and beat on an 18mm socket.20190323_200354.jpg 20190323_200410.jpg

This happens with many models - not just Tacoma. If swollen - try a 22mm. If the lugs are not swollen, a 21mm is used.

The factory lug nuts are just a lug nut with a pretty cover. The lug wrench, torques on that pretty cap. It'll break apart like @desertrunner24 has in his pic. Pull the cap off and you can get a socket on the lug nut.

Ah the old swollen nuts syndrome. Change them out for some gorilla ones. You do not want hammer and chisel this things off. A few members have done it and destroyed the post and wheel

Amazon has a bulk pack of 60 of the Gorilla 12x1.5 Toyota mag nuts for like $90... there's shorter ones and longer ones, you can go either way. I got shorter ones, they match the wheel locks' length and hide better.

I sold the other 40 (after buying a set of locks) on fleabay and netted about $60, so I essentially paid $30 for 20, a good bit cheaper than buying them by the 4-pack.

I swear they used to offer sets with 20 or 24 lugs + locks, but the only thing I see now between 4 packs and the bulk bags are the sets that are 100% wheel locks.

These Gorilla nuts some are talking of. Are they anodized or painted nuts. Bought some mag lugs off Amazon couple years ago and they suck. Nothing but factory lugs painted black.

Had bought other lugnuts from amazon for other cars, quantity 100 for crazy price of $9.00 and surprised to find they were anodized and are one tough nut. But they are not mag lugnuts for Tacoma wheels.

I just checked all 24 lug nuts, and 7 of them didn’t fit 21mm socket. The rest were perfectly fine. Not sure how the 7 suffered the swelling? Replace 7 or all 24?

I would just replace all 24 with high quality ones. The Gorilla brand ones everyone is recommending seem to be high quality and also function as wheel locks.

The stock lug nuts will last a long time if you ONLY use a 21 mm socket, tire shops will use a 7/8 and damage your lug nuts. I bring a 21mm socket when I have my tires done, after 11 years all the stock lug nuts on my truck are like new.

They swell because shops use air guns to remove/install them. That beats them up pretty good. I have all my original lugs and they are all in good shape. I always use a breaker bar to break the lugs, then use a battery drill to remove the lugs, and install them, but use a torque wrench to tighten them. I remove the wheels and take them to a local tire shop to install tires. I never let shops bolt on the wheels because some don't use a torque wrench or a torque stick to install them.
